Shoot! Digital Photography Workshop

The key to becoming a good photographer is spending plenty of time behind the camera. Whether it’s photographing the hustle of the big city, scenic small towns, stunning wildlife or colourful nightlife, you have to be there and work at it. It helps to be with someone who has done it all before, someone who can lead you to finding your own photographic style. John Bingham is an accomplished photographic professional and instructor and will help you get the best out of your camera and yourself. This is an intensive workshop that covers camera technique in challenging locations both day and night. Become adept at street photography, landscape photography, portraiture and night photography. This class will meet at various locations around the city.  For the first class students will meet at TSA before heading out to photograph on location.

Perspective Drawing Basics

This workshop will examine in detail the principals of one point, two-point, three-point perspective and their general application. Students will focus primarily on how to create and render interior and exterior spaces, with a secondary emphasis on large object rendering in reference to these spaces. This workshop is geared toward assisting people with realist or representational drawing and painting studio art works, as well as  people pursuing interior design, game concept and design, digital painting, animation in general, illustration, storyboarding, 2D architectural rendering or general 2D concept and design. Students will achieve an understanding of how the illusion of perspective works, and the ability to solve perspective problems in their artistic practice. 

Note: It is recommended that students have taken a course in Introduction to Drawing or have basic drawing skills.

Drawing Basics

This workshop will introduce students to the fundamentals of drawing, including: contour, gesture, value, perspective, and composition. It is a step-by-step approach to studying line, form, tone, composition and content. The assignments evolve gradually from simple studies of all drawing elements to more considered compositions, thus developing a synthesis of the eye/hand relationship. Gradually students will learn to employ traditional techniques in experimental ways and emphasis is equally placed on skill and individual style. Life Drawing - Structural Bodies

The focus of this three-day workshop is the representation of the human figure as a 3-dimensional form in space. Using basic principles of perspective, participants will analyze a variety of short and long poses with an eye to more accurately conveying volumes and relative positions of body forms.  This workshop will place emphasis on analysis and description, rather than on expression. Drawings will be primarily linear. The workshop can be taken on its own, but is also a natural complement to the Spring course 223 Structural Drawing. Most of the time will be spent drawing from live models, supplemented by brief lectures, handouts and demonstration, as well as some individual critique and coaching.  Mathematical skills will not be necessary. 

Note: A nude model will be used. It is recommended that students have taken a course in Introduction to Life Drawing or have basic drawing skills

Introduction to Colour Mixing

Based in colour theory and the primary colour palette, the content of this course thoroughly investigates colour mixing with an emphasis on tertiary colours and colour relationships. Additional work on colour reactions can be provided. Through structured exercises and practice, students will learn to see the elements that compose any observed colour and will develop their ability to make intuitive choices regarding values and colour temperature. 

Note: This is an introductory level course that is suitable for painters who want to build their colour-language skills.

Powdered Graphite and Acrylic Glazes

Following a technique utilized by the instructor, Brian Burnett, students will learn, via demonstrations, how to paint with powdered graphite mixed with acrylic mediums and then glazed with transparent acrylic layers of colour. Students will be drawing from personal foundation sketches onto canvases, prepared with Golden's Absorbent Ground. Students will then paint in a monochromatic grey scale (Grisaille), using the powdered graphite mixture to produce soft radiant images.  In the second stage of this technique students, will learn to apply transparent glazes, accenting and enhancing the first layers of powdered graphite.  The effect has the immediacy and delicacy of Japanese brush painting with the longevity and practicality of Acrylic painting.

Note: It is recommended that students have previous drawing and painting skills for this workshop. This is not appropriate for the absolute beginner.

Explorations in Composition

This course is intended to provide students with a compositional skill set to supplement the development of their own personal images or work developed in other classes. Course content includes: understanding the visual potential of the 2-dimensional picture plane, design principles that affect communication and interpretation of an idea/concept, visual aesthetics, and an awareness of and effectively using compositional variables and tools.  Students’ will develop a greater range of methods for achieving visually engaging images and be aware of a variety of options for composition and content development in order to better visually achieve their intended goal.

Topics include: form/shape, scale, direction, placement, depth, space, density, visual hierarchy, relationships of forms, contrast and contradiction, development of surface and specifically how they contribute to development of the picture plane.

Practical studio work will be a priority and students will be encouraged to work in the medium of their choice (drawing, painting, photography, digital). All media are welcome. Each practical session will be prefaced with a lecture/discussion and image examples. Students working both representationally and abstractly are welcome. 

Cut/Tear/Fold

In this 3-day workshop we will explore the potential to transform paper into sculptural forms, through cutting, folding and tearing processes. Students will look at the origins of these paper arts, from Chinese paper cutting and paper folding in Japan, to Victorian Silhouette work. Students will draw inspiration from by innovative contemporary artists working in this form, such as Ed Pien and Kara Walker. In addition, the class will explore the potential of tearing into the papers, such as in the work of artist Tara Donovan and others.  Pattern, repetition and variation in our paper will be investigated. These paper art works can be further transformed through drawing, painting and dye processes. The class will study these elements in organic forms such as foliage, microscopic life, insect structures and in geology. An alternative approach would be to investigate the potential for narrative, text and story telling using paper cutting and silhouette techniques. After preliminary experimentation, students will then create a cut, folded and/ or torn paper installation, inspired by organic forms or as narrative and text.

Drawing the Figure

Jumpstart your drawing skills with 3 days of supportive instruction in figurative representation. Each will consist of one 6-hour pose per day.  This class is perfect for those who have had recent weekly classes wishing for a short in-depth experience to explore ideas and deepen your practice. The instructor will assist students with problem solving techniques and/or interpretive coaching for personal exploration. A variety of wet and dry drawing media will be used.

Note: A nude model will be used.

Drawing with Ink

Investigate a centuries-old and graphically exciting medium.  This workshop will focus on the use of India ink for drawing.  India ink permits a huge range of possible textures and appearances, from ultra-crisp and graphically bold black and white images through to ultra-soft layers and veils of washes. Over the course of the workshop students will test out a variety of approaches to working with ink, both full-strength and using diluted washes. Techniques we will explore include: line drawing with different tools, methods of shading- hatching, cross-hatching, stippling, dry-brush drawing, using found materials, ink wash studies. As well as drawing demonstrations, students will have plenty of hands-on time to explore different techniques through still-life and reference imagery of their choosing, and the last afternoon will include working with a model.

Paperclay Figurative Sculpture

This course examines the process of using paperclay, a permanent malleable material for constructing sculptural objects and also the construction of armatures for figurative work in this medium.  The workshop will familiarize participants with the process I have developed for my own figurative sculpture where the object that is made is the finished work and requires no casting to be made permanent.   Participants can construct a figure from photos that will be supplied or create animal or abstract forms as they choose.  Some techniques for applying colour and finishes will also be covered. This course does not cover casting. 

Introduction to Life Painting: Essentials

This course provides an opportunity for an intensive painting experience using a life model. One model will be employed for 6 hours each day for 3 days. The idea is to have one long pose enabling an in depth painterly investigation or finishing, but this can be varied according to the needs of the participants. There is no stylistic agenda in this class. Participants are free to work in Classical, Impressionist, Modernist and Contemporary manners depending on their interests and will received instruction according to their individual needs. Possible media use: oil paint, acrylic, pastel, charcoal, graphite, inks, watercolour.

Note: A nude model will be used.

Collage Explorations

This summer intensive is designed for both beginners and returning students who wish to expand the collage process. This course will explore the fundamentals in creating two-dimensional collage and photo collage works as well as expand our investigations into longer thematic collage and assemblage projects. We will transform a wide range of intriguing collage materials through fragmentation and rearrangement, pattern and repetition, layering and transparency as well as mixed media processes with drawing and painting. We will explore text and narrative through the creation of an altered book, as well as serial imagery, and the transformation of paper into sculpture through folding, cutting and stitching techniques.

Drawing for Painting

This course integrates drawing skills with painting practice. Drawing is a vital tool for painters to explore ways of seeing composition, colour values and their relationships, image development and space perception. Students will use a variety of drawing and painting materials to investigate these fundamentals. Classes are structured to work between drawing and painting through observational and conceptual exercises and projects. Subjects include still life, figure, landscape, abstraction as well as conceptual and memory-based projects. Lectures will focus on painting and drawing practices of historical and contemporary artists. Individual support and group critiques will also be provided. This class is useful for visual artists at all levels.

 

 

Note: It is recommended that students have taken an Introduction to Painting course or have some painting experience including the use of acrylic or oil paint.

Painting Plants and Gardens

This five-day intensive allows both the novice and intermediate-level student to practice painting skills related to botanical subjects. It is an appropriate follow-up to Basic Painting, Fundamental Oils and Fundamental Acrylics.  This course provides an opportunity for intimate and sustained examination of flowering plants as well as landscape subjects.  Students will spend two days working on-site at Edward Gardens preparing studies and photographing their subject to develop and complete later in studio. Formal concerns related to composition, colour and paint application will be addressed.  Both traditional and contemporary approaches will be encouraged, providing students ample freedom to interpret their subject as they see fit.  Allen Gardens Conservatory will act as an alternative location if weather in inclement.

Abstraction in Acrylics

In this course, students will explore abstract painting and thinking while working with acrylic paints. Students will work through projects that explore the vast boundaries comprising the term “abstract art” while further developing their painting skills towards acquiring a stronger visual language. Demonstrations will be provided and critiques will follow assignments. 

Note: It is recommended that students have taken an Introduction to Painting course and have some experience with acrylic paint.

Experiencing Contemporary Art: Gallery Hop

In this week-long intensive, the class will visit the most engaging current exhibitions in Toronto.  Museums, public galleries, artist-run centres and commercial galleries will all be explored and the students will gain an understanding of the mandates of these different types of exhibition spaces and how that affects the exhibition programming. The course will cover the spectrum of media and aesthetic outlooks in today's art. 

Figure Concepts

This course is designed specifically for experienced or upper level students who wish to focus on conceptual development of their figurative work. Students will become aware of the idea of “the subject” when working with the figure. Historical and contemporary themes on the use of the figure will be studied. Students will investigate and understand why they use the figure and how they are most interested in using it as a means of expression and communication. This course is not exclusively for painters: students working in all media are welcome. Although this course is conceptually driven, consideration will also be given to process, media handling and aspects of formalism of students’ work in order to best achieve the desired outcome. Emphasis will be placed on getting students to use in-class set-ups as a launching point for creating mages that are uniquely their own.  Development of students’ individual approach of the figure will be paramount, as well as, furthering the students’ ability to use source imagery and set-ups for their own image development. The class will be working with nude or costumed models.  Poses are 1-3 hours in length to allow for the full development of an idea and a fully resolved image or group of images.

 

 

Note: Students are expected to have a solid foundation of figure painting skills. It is recommended that students have taken coursework in basic painting, life drawing and/or life painting, and image development, or equivalent.

Drawing An Experimental Approach

This drawing course addresses non-traditional techniques and provides uninterrupted time for creative exploration in mark-making using mixed media. Through intensive and sustained investigation, students will explore varying methods for image development and determine how accidental mishaps can lead to unexpected possibilities. In addition, participants will be encouraged to explore new and unorthodox techniques for expanding their repertoire while making use of opportunities for technical refinement and inventive discovery. This informal but intense course will give students the confidence to think beyond conventional practice and provide them with the freedom to produce drawings that are subjective in nature, and creatively inventive and unique in substance.

Acrylic Basics

This course will familiarize both the beginner and intermediate-level student with the technical understanding required to manipulate acrylic paint. Special emphasis will be placed on contemporary glazing techniques adapted from approaches used historically during the Renaissance period.  It will also provide an introduction to Golden Paints New Product Line called “OPEN ACRYLICS”.   The properties of this versatile, contemporary medium distinguish it from traditional oil painting in significant ways. We will explore some of these properties through hands-on experiments; blending and mixing paint, creating transparency vs. opacity, and adding mediums to paint mixtures to create surfaces reminiscent of varnished oils.

Painting Urban Parks

Painting Urban Parks is suited for beginner and experienced Painters. This course aims to develop observational skills and techniques both in the studio and out of doors. Specifically, morning sketch outings followed by in studio (Air Conditioned) afternoons. The city park provides a grassland and woodland barrier for individuals to escape the impact of our city experience in all aspects. This environmental sanctuary will provide the backdrop to open up the imagination of students. These park locations can be depicted literally, expressively (through metaphorical images), and abstraction. Through discussion, PowerPoint presentation and demos, students will embark on an investigation into interpreting Urban City Parks. 

Note: Sudents should be prepared to begin painting in the first class. It is recommended students have taken an Introduction to Painting course, or have had some painting experience.

Introduction to Life Painting

This course is ideal for both beginner and experienced figure painters. Basic painting principles, content, and composition development will be addressed to meet each student’s needs and positively challenge them in refining their art-making practice. Experienced painters will be encouraged to push their work conceptually, moving beyond simple rendering of the figure. They will be able to create, through conscious composition and content decisions, paintings that reflect an intended concept or idea. New painters will learn the fundamentals of developing form and volume, and rendering flesh with paint. Examination of tone, structure, colour theory, media techniques, and the principles of observation and perception will also be an integral component of the course. Students’ progress will be supported by demonstrations, pictorial references, and constructive critique. Students’ personal goals and objectives will be a priority. The course allows for direct visual observation of the figure (nude or clothed) while painting and poses will range from 20 minutes to 6 hours in length.

Anatomy and Figure Drawing: Look what's under your skin

Explore the human body while learning to recognize and name bony landmarks and muscle groups visible on the model and yourself. This course enables students to explore the skeletal and muscular systems by drawing directly from a skeleton, bones, and a live model. Enhance your awareness of bumps and indentations on the surface of the body, and understand which are formed by bone and muscle. Gestures, sketches, and studies help students focus on structure, function, and proportion. Media: Coloured pencil, conté, charcoal, newsprint, drawing paper, tracing paper.

This eight week structured course is intended for rank beginners and experienced students wishing to reconnect with the foundations of representational drawing practice. Introduction to Portrait Drawing

This course provides students with a foundation of drawing skills using black and white and colour drawing media, such as soft pastels and pastel pencils. During the first part of the course, anatomy, drawing techniques, composition, and observational skills are stressed. The focus in the second part is on developing the student’s approach to portraiture. This may include rendering a likeness using expressiveness, or experimenting with the genre. Examples of artists’ works will be used to illustrate the diverse approaches to portraiture.

Structural Drawing

Examine the “building blocks” of the complex world around you. Intended for novice but committed or intermediate level students, this ten-week course is more analytical than expressive in its approach. The focus is on rendering a convincing depiction of three-dimensional forms and spaces on a flat surface. Lectures, demonstrations, and drawing exercises will investigate basic principles of perspective (e.g., constructing cylinders and boxes, and relating forms to a common vanishing point or points). Drawings will involve invented perspective constructions as well as observational drawing. Subject matter will be simple at the start and move on to more complex challenges, from still life through to the human body, with an eye to helping students convey structure and volume. Drawings will be predominately linear. Relevant art history will also be introduced.

Note: It is recommended that students have taken an Introduction to Drawing course, or have some drawing experience

Explorations in Figure Studies

This course is intended for students wishing to develop their figure drawing beyond simple representation. Using a variety of media, students will learn to take chances and create lively and thought-provoking works. Consideration will also be given to different ways of representing the figure - as a piece of design, a metaphoric symbol and within a conceptual framework. Examples of relevant artists` work will be shown. The point of this course is not to work on improving the depiction of human figures in a proportionate, literal fashion. Rather, this course is designed to get students with a basic familiarity with depicting the human form to stretch themselves, both technically and conceptually.

Explorations will be divided into two principal parts. The first part of the course will concentrate on the foundations of figure drawing: proportion, shape, gesture, line, value- but in ways intended to open possibilities rather than to arrive at a fixed method. Using models as a starting point, the second part of the course will allow for a variety of investigations of context, content and materials within figurative compositions.

For less experienced students, the course provides an opportunity to gain confidence through taking creative chances in a supportive environment. For students with more developed drawing skills, it offers an opportunity to explore new possibilities in terms of conceptual approaches and alternative material use. The course is not concerned so much with accurate depiction of the figure or proportions. Instead, emphasis is placed on taking chances and having fun.

The class will work from nude or costumed models. The poses will range in length from gestures to 3 hours.

Perspective Drawing

This course will examine in detail the principles of one point, two-point, three-point perspective and their general application. Students will focus primarily on how to create and render interior and exterior spaces, with a secondary emphasis on large object rendering in reference to these spaces. This workshop is geared toward assisting people with realist or representational drawing and painting studio art works, as well as people pursuing interior design, game concept and design, digital painting, animation in general, illustration, storyboarding, 2D architectural rendering or general 2D concept and design. Students will achieve an understanding of how the illusion of perspective works, and the ability to solve perspective problems in their artistic practice.

Drawing as a Contemporary Practice

This course is designed to give students a better idea of the scope of possibilities of various drawing media. Assignments will be geared toward expanding the student’s notions of drawing, both technically and conceptually. There will be assignments using mylar sheets to create layered images and large scale drawing as well as simple altered book formats. Slide and video presentations will show students how other artists have used drawing in many challenging formats.

Beyond Basic Life Drawing

The principal objective of this course is to assist students in deepening their engagement with figurative representation. To this end, in-class time will be structured around increasingly long poses. Students will be encouraged to work as large as possible, and emphasis will be placed on overall composition. Emphasis will also be placed on the content and context of figurative artwork. It is hoped that by the end of this course, students will have honed their observational, compositional, and mark-making skills, and will have gained experience to move from study of the model to fully realized compositions of personal significance.

The course will guide students through the entire process of turning a clay model into a solid, lasting sculpture. Students will start from a previously completed clay sculpture and will go through the process of creating an appropriate mold type for it, such as waste mold or silicon mold. Once the mold is completed, a cast in the chosen material will be done. Finally, depending on the desired look, a patina finish will be applied. Various techniques of finishing and patinas will be explored. For larger-sized sculptures, an extra materials cost may be required. Note: Students must bring an existing figure sculpture of their own to cast. Figure Sculpture

Employing the classical approach, students will develop their sculptural and observational skills. Students will learn about armature building, materials, and tools for sculpting. This course will follow a step-by-step approach to figure sculpting and will allow students to develop their skills while studying a specific body part at a time, and the entire body in the end. Students will work from direct observation using classical plaster casts of anatomical figures, the human skeleton, and then move to the life model. Each body part study will be broken down into simple stages of Mass conception and/or Ecorche (anatomy) with an emphasis on proportion, planar structure, bony landmarks, muscle groups, and points of origin and insertion. A nude model will be used.

Introduction to Figure Sculpture – Portrait and Facial Expressions

This is a new exciting course for those who wish to gain a stronger understanding of the human head, portraiture, facial expressions and facial animation. Working from the life model, this Figure Sculpture course will be focusing on Portrait and Facial Expressions. For the duration of the term, each student will be sculpting in clay the five most important facial expressions from which any other expression can be recreated: Neutral, Happy, Sad, Angry & Surprised. In order to fully understand the mechanism behind facial expressions, an in-depth anatomical study of the skull bone structure and facial muscles will be covered. By the end of this course students will be able to create new convincing facial expressions using their five facial studies as reference. Next to working from a life model, students will also benefit from looking at anatomical models, expression charts, photographs and all new facial expression models created by Instructor.

Note: This intermediate-level course can also accommodate beginner sculptors.

Animal and Imaginary Sculpture

Students will learn how to go from a conceptual idea/vision to the creation of a finished sculpture by studying animal sculpture and/or figurative imaginary, conceptual sculpture. This course will not be limited to clay modeling but will also cover and encourage the use of other sculpting media such as wax, plaster and found objects. We will go over the practical aspect of sculpting multiple figure compositions, environmental settings, clothing & props, as well as surface details such as, skin, fur, hair, scales and wrinkles. Various Styles will be looked at going from, realistic, loose & sketchy to animated and abstract.

Note: This course accommodates both beginner and advanced students. Introduction to Figure sculpture is recommended but not essential.

3D Anatomy/Figure Sculpture

The course is an in-depth study of artistic anatomy through clay sculpting. This term students will be sculpting a female écorché (anatomical figure). We will be working from the life model, skeleton, anatomical models and charts. Old master drawings and sculptures will also be introduced. Students will learn how to see beyond the skin surface and start by sculpting the bone structure of the human body before getting into the muscles and fatty tissues. Each muscle group will be studied from a 3D perspective and modeled onto the skeleton looking closely at their grouping, point of origin & insertion and action. Students will end up with a 3D anatomical figure that they will be able to keep use as valuable reference. They will have gain a stronger knowledge and understanding of anatomy applicable to not only to figure sculpture but also to figure drawing and painting.

 

Note: A nude model will be used. Previous experience sculpting with clay is recommended but not a must.

Introduction to Sculpture: Media Explorations

Media Explorations is an introduction to a broad range of approaches to object making. Through image presentations, demonstrations and hands-on work time in the studio, students will develop technical skills using both traditional and non-traditional materials. These materials include plaster, wire, plasticine, and found objects. Projects will introduce students to the elements of composition in three dimensions as well as the means by which a sculpture can communicate, such as through material, process, line, texture, mass and weight. Additional methods explored will include modeling, additive construction, planar construction, found-object assemblage and installation. An experimental approach to object-making and a sense of discovery are encouraged.

Projects introduce students to the elements of composition in three dimensions as well as the means by which a sculpture can communicate. These means include material, process, line, texture, mass, and weight. Informal discussion of conceptual, contemporary and historical approaches to reductive sculpture will also be included.

Painting 1 & 2

This is an ongoing, mixed-level studio course with an emphasis on development and expansion of visual language skills. Students are encouraged to work on structured exercises that lead to developing individual projects. We will explore fundamental painterly concerns such as light and shadow, colour relationships, paint handling, composition, abstraction, gesture, energy, intention and personal expression. Acrylic Explorations: Image Transfers

As producers and consumers in today’s vast image economy, contemporary artists freely adopt and adapt materials from many sources. They have evolved new programs and attitudes towards appropriation, and the repurposing of photographic images, culled from the Internet, magazines, newspapers, advertisements, television, films, personal and public archives, studio walls, and from other works of art.  These are all fair game.  This course will focus on exploring various methods of using acrylic colour and acrylic mediums to transfer images to paper, canvas and wood panel, to transparent acrylic skins and to painted acrylic skins, We will consider various contemporary compositional strategies and finishing techniques, as well as looking at various artist who use transfers in the work.

Water Media Techniques

Many contemporary artists are reinvigorating the visual language of Water Media with new subject matter, large-scale work and informal mixtures of traditional materials.  The aim of this course is to introduce some of these exciting options to those new to Water Soluble Media. During the Fall Term we will look at the basic technical principles of working with watercolor, ink, gouache, water-soluble pencils, crayons and graphite on paper and discuss simple methods to intermix these media. 

The Winter Term will integrate the use of acrylic emulsions such as Acrylic Matte Medium, Molding Paste, and Gesso with traditional water media in new and unusual ways. The technical investigations from the Fall Session will be expanded to encourage working on a larger scale, as well as utilizing contemporary compositional strategies.   This course will include instructor demonstrations, student investigations, and 1 scheduled group discussions.  Those artists’ whose works concentrate in part or in whole on Water Media will be also be introduced.

Basic Painting Techniques is designed for individuals who have little or no experience in Painting. The primary focus will be to introduce paint handling and colour mixing in various practical exercises and hands-on painting projects. PowerPoint presentations and instructor demonstrations will walk the class though each project. Fundamental Acrylics

The Fall Term of this foundation course will introduce students to the important relationship between acrylic pigments and acrylic mediums and gels.  Mediums and gels offer the artist a world of control in changing acrylic colours, creating glazes, extending paints, building texture and altering surface finishes. The range of mediums explored will encompass GAC 100 (for diluting paint), Fluid Matt Medium, Soft and Regular Gels, High Solid Gel, as well as Acrylic Glazing Liquid (extends drying time of paint).  This course will examine ways in which to start a painting, blending techniques, colour mixing, creating transparent and opaque effects, emulating the look of oil paint, encaustic (wax), creating watercolour like stains on raw canvas and experimenting with metallic pigments. Students will have a deeper understanding of the importance of using acrylic mediums to enhance the appearance of their paintings and will afford them the confidence to approach any basic painting class.

The Winter Term of this course will investigate acrylic pastes and specialty acrylic gels that used in conjunction with acrylic colours will broaden working properties and expand creative possibilities.  Choosing from a vast range of products available, the class will experiment with Light and Hard Molding Paste, Coarse and Fine Pumice Gel, Crackle Paste, GAC 200 (for non-absorbent surfaces like metal) and GAC 400 (to stiffen fabric) and GAC 800 (for pouring techniques).  This course will discuss alternative painting surfaces, such as wood, Plexiglas and fabric as well as examining how pastes can be used to create textured foundations for painting.  Students will learn how to strengthen their basic skills with discussions on paint handling, composition and choosing colour palettes.  Upon completion of this course students will have a solid understanding of the endless possibilities that acrylic paints, mediums, gels and pastes can make available to them.

Introduction to Life Painting (Summer)

This course is ideal for both beginner and experienced figure painters. Basic painting principles, content, and composition development will be addressed to meet each student’s needs and positively challenge them in refining their art-making practice. Experienced painters will be encouraged to push their work conceptually, moving beyond simple rendering of the figure. They will be able to create, through conscious composition and content decisions, paintings that reflect an intended concept or idea. New painters will learn the fundamentals of developing form and volume, and rendering flesh with paint. Examination of tone, structure, colour theory, media techniques, and the principles of observation and perception will also be an integral component of the course. Students’ progress will be supported by demonstrations, pictorial references, and constructive critique. Students’ personal goals and objectives will be a priority. Figure and Portrait Painting

Students will explore observational Figure and Portrait Painting through 2 poses lasting 5 weeks each.  Proportion, shape, value, light and colour theory both in reference to the portrait and the body will be discussed. This painting course promotes the ability to capture drama wherever it is expressed in the body. Acrylic Explorations: Watercolour Effects

Watercolours can be an unforgiving medium. A ‘mistake’ can be difficult to hide, colours can easily become ‘muddy’ with overwork and layered or glazed effects can be a challenge because watercolours are resoluble. Fluid Acrylics can be very effective alternative. They can mimic watercolour using all the varied techniques common to the watercolour medium. In addition to paper, suitable surfaces include both raw and primed canvas as well as wood panel. Helen Frankenthaler and Morris Louis invented a particular type of Color Field painting called Stain Painting in which the liquid paint seeps into the fibers of an unprimed canvas. This course will focus on the use of GOLDENS Fluid & High Flow Acrylics to achieve stained, poured and flowing effects, as well as incorporating GOLDENS Absorbent Ground, Light Molding Paste, and Fibre Paste into the mix.

Note: This course is suitable for anyone who has had some experience with Acrylic Painting and Drawing or has taken Fundamental Acrylics 1 and/or 2.

Impasto Painting

In this Impasto workshop we will look at the application of thick paint using Acrylic colours, plus mediums, Heavy Gel and Molding Paste, to extend the paint’s thickness. Using Impasto creates a painted 3-dimensional surface. This can be built up with brushes or palette knives or any other form of scraping tool that an artist wishes to use. Conversely Image painting or Abstraction, can be, successfully arrived at with this technique. Artists from Van Gogh to Tom Thomson relied on thick undulating brush strokes, for their personal image expression. Canadians Paul-Emile Borduas and Jean-Paul Riopelle both used this technique with palette knives and scrappers to arrive at their Abstract works. If you don’t wish to be a finicky painter, impasto is a suitable technique to discover. Through instructor demonstration and practical application, students will be introduced to this versatile painting process.

Introduction to Watercolour

This course will provide a fundamental approach to watercolour, for both the beginner and advanced student, with an emphasis on transparency, colour mixing, brushworks, washes and illumination while being true to the John Singer Sargent approach to the medium. Students will work from still-life and landscape and can expect demonstrations followed by ample painting time, and a critique towards the end of each class.  

Fluid Acrylic Abstraction on Paper

Abstract art, seemingly unrelated to the world of appearance, has been a cause of much consternation among the general public. This course will help deepen the student’s understanding of the various forms and degrees of abstraction and will include a short overview of 20th-century developments. We will begin our exploration using a method known as Analog Drawing/Painting to create non-representational imagery. The focus will concentrate on using Fluid Acrylic on paper, including Yupo paper which is a state-of-the-art polypropylene material offering all the attributes of the highest quality papers with the added benefits of extraordinary durability. There will be individual feedback from the instructor, as well as group interactions and discussions.

Note: This course is suitable for students who have taken Fundamental Acrylics, or have some experience with Acrylic Paint.

Acrylic Basics

This course will familiarize both the beginner and intermediate-level student with the technical understanding required to manipulate acrylic paint. Special emphasis will be placed on contemporary glazing techniques adapted from approaches used historically during the Renaissance period. It will also provide an introduction to Golden Paints New Product Line called “OPEN ACRYLICS”. The properties of this versatile, contemporary medium distinguish it from traditional oil painting in significant ways. We will explore some of these properties through hands-on experiments; blending and mixing paint, creating transparency vs. opacity, and adding mediums to paint mixtures to create surfaces reminiscent of varnished oils.

Introduction to Colour Mixing

Based in colour theory and the primary colour palette, the content of this course thoroughly investigates colour mixing with an emphasis on tertiary colours and colour relationships. Additional work on colour reactions can be provided. Through structured exercises and practice, students will learn to see the elements that compose any observed colour and will develop their ability to make intuitive choices regarding values and colour temperature.

Note: This is an introductory level course that is suitable for painters who want to build their colour-language skills.

Impasto Painting

To abstract is to generalize. This course is an appropriate follow-up to Fundamental Oils and Basic Painting. Figure Concepts

This course is designed specifically for experienced or upper level students who wish to focus on conceptual development of their figurative work. Students will become aware of the idea of “the subject” when working with the figure. Historical and contemporary themes on the use of the figure will be studied. Students will investigate and understand why they use the figure and how they are most interested in using it as a means of expression and communication. This course is not exclusively for painters: students working in all media are welcome. Although this course is conceptually driven, consideration will also be given to process, media handling and aspects of formalism of students’ work in order to best achieve the desired outcome. Emphasis will be placed on getting students to use in-class set-ups as a launching point for creating mages that are uniquely their own. Development of students’ individual approach of the figure will be paramount, as well as, furthering the students’ ability to use source imagery and set-ups for their own image development. The class will be working with nude or costumed models. Poses are 1-3 hours in length to allow for the full development of an idea and a fully resolved image or group of images.

Note: Students are expected to have a solid foundation of figure painting skills. It is recommended that students have taken coursework in basic painting, life drawing and/or life painting, and image development, or equivalent.

Drawing and Collage

Drawing and Collage is an innovative class for beginner students who wish to develop their skills in the foundations of drawing in combination with explorations in collage. This course combines the fundamentals of representational and expressive drawing with the collage process. Each week there will be lesson in drawing fundamentals: from gesture and contour drawing to explorations in mark making or extended studies of the figure.  We will incorporate a wide range of drawing media from graphite to charcoal, ink and coloured media. A selection of our drawings will then be transformed through the collage process: they will be cut up, layered and rearranged in combination with other papers, materials and found imagery. Sometimes, the collage process will be the starting point for the drawing. To enhance and enrich our experience, we will refer to artists, past and present, who work in drawing and collage combinations.

Note: No experience necessary.

The collage process is based on material selected, isolated and then transformed through recombination and arrangement. The Spring term concentrates on the basics of composition and concept in collage works. Approaches include the fragmentation and rearrangement of photo collage material, decollage and defacement, layering and transparency as well as explorations in frottage, paint and phototransfers. This course will explore the diverse histories of collage and assemblage, from its origins in paper cutting and folk traditions to Dada and DIY attitudes in contemporary art.

Introduction to Printmaking

This course is designed as an introduction to printmaking and the purpose and application of making multiples in art. Students will learn a variety of printing techniques as well as a broad visual language of printmaking. In the Fall term, students will be introduced to relief printing (linocut and woodcut) in both b/w and colour. The Winter term will cover the fundamentals of intaglio and will include, line etching, aquatint, sugar lift, and spit biting. Students will be encouraged to develop their own ideas.  Instruction will also emphasize the use of non-hazardous materials.

Collage and Assemblage 2

This course is intended for students who have successfully completed Collage and Assemblage 1 and for those who wish to further explore their explorations. Students will work with a wide range of found materials which are transformed through the process of collage, assemblage and installation. This course is structured thematically, with a series of projects based on one or more topics for exploration. Some of the past investigations include fairytales, mapping and cities, and the sensory body. Students can choose to work on structured assignments or in a self-directed way with a view towards developing a cohesive body of work. Throughout the course, reference will be made to the history of collage and assemblage as well as collage and assemblage as a contemporary art practice. These references will inform and enrich art making, dialogue, and discussion.

Note: This course is an appropriate follow-up to the Collage and Assemblage 1 course. If students have not taken this, they should have equivalent previous experience.

We offer some of our courses in a shorter, more accessible calendar of six weeks. This format includes courses for various levels, and in a range of disciplines: drawing, mixed media, painting, sculpture, digital courses and art history. Six-week courses offer students a more condensed, but still comprehensive, hands-on learning experience.

Rendering the Clothed Figure

Students will explore observational figure painting through 2 poses of a clothed model lasting 3 weeks each.  Proportion, shape, value, light, and colour theory, both in reference to the understanding of tertiary colours of skin, and achieving convincing drapery and fabric will be discussed.  This is a mixed-media course focused primarily on acrylic paint, ink, charcoal, graphite, and its combined use with oil paint.  Various methods of application using indirect painting processes will be investigated. Be it a more representational or abstracted approach, students will be encouraged to explore various aesthetic styles of their choosing.  An emphasis will be placed on creating volume and depth while exploring the expressive potential of shape and brush treatment and its relationship to colour and light.

Note: Students should have previous life drawing experience.

Beyond Basic Life Drawing: Clothing and Costume

For people wishing to do narrative art, portrait work, graphic art or costume design, drawing people’s clothing is an important element. There are many courses devoted to drawing people’s bodies without clothes, but clothing -and how to depict it- is often a secondary consideration. Learning the body’s shapes is a crucial foundation for dressed figures as well, but there is much to consider about how clothing sits on the body, and how light and shadow behave on fabric This six -week course will focus squarely on people in a variety of different sorts of garments, including casual wear, work wear, formal/fancy dress and fashion/club wear. Instruction consists of drawing from the model, with one-on-one feedback, supplemented by short lectures, demonstrations and handouts.

Prerequisite: It recommended that students have taken Drawing 1 and/or Life Drawing 1 or prior life drawing experience.

Perspective Basics for Drawing

Examine the “building blocks” of the complex world around you. Whatever you are drawing from observation: people, places or objects, an understanding of the basics of perspective are a useful addition to any artist's toolkit. Intended for novice but committed or intermediate level students, this six-week basics course is more analytical than expressive in its approach. Beginning with simple block, tube and sphere forms and progressing to more complex objects, students will explore how to analyze and better convey the 3-d volumes of the world we see - and learn how to better relate that to perspective principles. This course is also an excellent primer for the Summer Intensive 619, Structural Bodies. Instruction will consist of lots of hands-on drawing time with individual feedback, supplemented by short lectures, demonstrations and handouts.

Prerequisite: It recommended that students have taken Drawing 1 or equivalent.

Life Drawing Essentials

This six-week course will introduce students to the engaging and challenging practice of drawing the human figure from life. For many, the process of representing a human body is a challenge. Students will be introduced to the foundations of the drawing process: gestural study, measurement and proportion, contour and mass drawing, and some consideration of light and tone. Major elements of body structure will be reviewed over the course of the term. Instruction consists of drawing from the model, supplemented by short lectures, demonstrations and handouts. Some relevant historical and contemporary artists will be introduced as well. While the focus in this class will be the human form, the exercises & processes used can apply with equal relevance to most other observational drawing situations. This course is suitable for beginner and intermediate drawing students, and it is also an excellent class for polishing up rusty past experience in figure drawing.

Prerequisite: It recommended that students have taken a Drawing 1 course, but it is not required.

Fluid Acrylics on Yupo & Terraskin Papers

This course will introduce the use of Yupo & TerraSkin ‘Paper’ with Fluid Acrylic Paint.  Yupo Paper is a machine-made state-of-the-art 100% polypropylene material that is waterproof and stain-resistant. TerraSkin is made from 75% mineral powder (ground calcium carbonate or limestone) & 25% non-toxic resin, using no paper pulp, water or bleach during manufacturing.   Both surfaces resist tearing and buckling, remaining perfectly flat, thus eliminating the need for soaking, stretching, or taping.  They are ideally suited for a variety of applications, excelling in Water Media usage.  This workshop will concentrate on various courses of action for applying Golden’s Fluid Acrylics to this alternative surface.  In addition participants will also focus on imagery borrowed from diverse traditions employing the geometric image called a Mandala.  The word Mandala means, "circle" in Sanskrit.  Mandalas are used for focusing attention, for establishing a sacred space and as an aid to meditation.  We will make use of sound and music to help create images loosely based on the historical Mandala.

Prerequisite: Suitable for beginners & intermediate painters.

Outdoor Digital Photography

Learn the basics of Digital Photography and Adobe Photoshop in the streets, alleyways and parks of Toronto. Studio instruction will include understanding how your digital camera works and how to take the best photo possible. Excursions into the city will put theory into practice. Back in the studio participants will work with Adobe Photoshop to apply creative techniques that make their photos stand out.

Note: A digital camera of any type is essential for this course and some knowledge of computers is helpful but not essential. This course uses CS6 Master Collection. INTRODUCTORY TO INTERMEDIATE LEVELS.

Photoshop: Digital Abstracts

Long considered as the go to tool for fine tuning digital photography and creating compelling and complex montages, Digital Abstracts introduces students to one more side of Adobe Photoshop. A purely digital course, Digital Abstracts prepares students to use digital photos, scans and online imagery as the basis of endless variations of abstract expression. Students will learn the basics of Photoshop layering and advance into the use of digital blending and filter application in six project driven classes. This course uses CS6 Master Collection.

Note: Basic knowledge of Mac computers and Mac OS 10.x or experience with Microsoft Windows. This course is suitable for beginner to intermediate-level students.

In drawing and painting circles, Mylar has become an ever-popular support. Sometimes described as Polyester film, it is used by artists for its archival quality and impermeable surface. These two factors plus its durability make it an ideal support for drawing and oil based materials. This six week course will introduce students to a spectrum of drawing and painting techniques using charcoal, oil stick and oil paints. Students will be shown a range of application techniques via demos and samples of artists’ work. Upon completion, students will have an introductory knowledge of Mylar that will provide an additional option for creative and artistic practice.

Young artists (ages 7-18) are guided through age-appropriate explorations of various mediums and processes. Field trips to art galleries introduce students to historical and contemporary artists, and hands-on studio time develops technical skills and a personal style through experimentation and creative problem-solving. Youth Studio, Family Art Studio and Art Camps cover a range of art disciplines, while digital courses cover photography and sculpting in ZBrush.

Youth Studio (Ages 14-17), Summer Art Camp

This 2-week Summer Art Camp allows students ages 14 -17 years old to explore their imagination with a hands on approach in traditional and contemporary methods and ultimately find their own voice through the arts. Through (life) drawing, painting, sculpture/object making collage, assemblage, mixed media students learn technical skills, knowledge of contemporary visual arts and art history, and are encouraged to develop their own personal creative process. Field trips to museums and galleries as well as exhibition and performance opportunities are also an integral part of the program.

Youth Studio (Ages 13-16) is a ten-week Spring visual art program designed for tweens and teens.  This program allows students to explore their imagination with a hands-on approach in traditional and contemporary methods and ultimately find their own voice through the arts. Through (life) drawing, painting, sculpture/object making collage, assemblage, mixed media students learn technical skills, knowledge of contemporary visual arts and art history, and are encouraged to develop their own personal creative process. Field trips to museums and galleries as well as exhibition and performance opportunities are also an integral part of the program.

Digital Sculpting with ZBrush

Starting with a quick introduction, this course will take you to the next step of digital sculpting with ZBrush, the leading digital sculpting application in the industry. Going beyond sculpting the figure and organic subjects, we will be focusing on sculpting hard-surface mechanical objects such as props, weapons, armors, robots & vehicles. We will cover how to paint directly on your 3D models. We will also learn more advanced workflow such as FiberMesh and MicroMesh.

Creative Photoshop Basics

This course is designed for first-time users of Adobe Photoshop. Through project-based, hands-on exercises, students will explore the tools and techniques used to draw, paint, and manipulate images. Digital Photography Basics

In this introductory course, students will learn the basics of digital photography. Technical instruction with a focus on artistic exploration of subject matter will be covered. Camera hardware and software, lighting and composition, lens effects, file transferring and storing, printing, and an introduction to the digital darkroom using Photoshop are covered. There will be field trips to photograph nature, architecture and/or street scenes. As a final project, students present a thematic series of photographs in the form of a slide show or prints. A digital camera of any type is essential for this course.

Note: Students should have a basic knowledge of Mac computers and OS 10.x or experience with Microsoft Windows. This course uses CS6 Master Collection.

Introduction to Video Art

This course is designed to introduce students to digital video as a medium within contemporary art. Assignments with differing approaches to the medium will help students develop an understanding of the basic principles of time-based art. The assignments build one upon the other to familiarize students with editing and effects as tools for creating innovative artworks. The level of self-direction in assignments increases as the course progresses. Exhibitions, readings and video screenings will expand the student’s awareness of the range of video work being made internationally.

Note: Basic knowledge of Mac computers and Mac OS 10.x or experience with Microsoft Windows. This course is suitable for beginner to intermediate-level students. This course uses CS6 Master Collection.

Digital Sculpting with ZBrush

This course is an introduction to digital sculpting using ZBrush, the leading digital sculpting application in the industry. ZBrush feels very much like traditional sculpting and allows for limitless creativity. Student will learn how to create and sculpt digitally simple organic and hard surface objects. They will then move on to working on more elaborate personal projects such as figure studies, character creation including clothing & props, concept designs, or environmental sets.

Note: This course is suitable for beginner and intermediate students.

Illustrator/Photoshop

This introductory level course focuses on Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop, the industry standard software programs used by artists and designers alike. All aspects of Illustrator will be introduced, and students will learn how to create vector illustrations, edit and import image files, design layouts for graphic posters, magazine spreads, book covers, packaging, pattern making, perspective drawing, typographic design, etc, and how to set up files for professional output. All available Illustrator tools will be thoroughly explained in an ongoing per-project basis. Photoshop will also be addressed. It is used by many industries/professions and outputs to a wide range files types. Among the options explored in Photoshop are: editing image files from a variety of sources; creating digital paintings and/or illustrations; laying out & designing projects for print, web and/or devices; distressing images and text; and creating and applying batch actions to folders of images. 

Note: This course uses CS6 Master Collection. Students should have basic knowledge of Mac computers and Mac OS 10.x or extensive experience with Microsoft Windows. Basic knowledge of Photoshop is recommended.

Experiencing Contemporary Art: Gallery Hop

Explore the evolution of art from 1965 to the present day with gallery tours, slide lectures, and selected readings. This dynamic course is designed to facilitate the understanding and interpretation of contemporary art by introducing students to some of the themes, issues, and structures of current art practices. The emphasis is definitely on visiting the galleries exhibiting the most challenging, relevant art, but well-selected readings and pertinent slide lectures also clarify the defining characteristics of modernist, postmodernist, and contemporary art. The stylistic and material diversity of the contemporary is surveyed in this course: practices ranging from traditional media like painting and sculpture to new media like digital works and installations are considered and contextualized, while numerous artistic modes such as appropriation, conceptualism, pluralism, identity art, and relationalism are examined. Lively discussions during and after gallery visits, lectures, visiting artists and readings will also be a key component of this course.

Canadian Art: The Grand Tour

Ever wanted to understand Canadian Art but you don't know where to start, then this course is for you. Get a "behind the scenes experience" of Canadian art! This course will be held mostly out in the field, touring collections, examining art in institutions, speaking with curators and exploring the vaults of galleries.  This fast paced eight-week course will be a romp through Canadian Art History and will explore Canadian art from the time of Paul Kane up to Canadian contemporary art today. The course will introduce students to the history of art in Canadian by examining key artists, artworks and the intellectual and social context in which they were created. These courses offer individuals an opportunity to delve into both practical and exploratory ground in their artistic endeavors.  Concentrating on the serious and pragmatic path to becoming a professional practicing artist, areas are addressed that may not arise in classes covering more hands-on techniques.  Here, we provide opportunities such as guiding the beginner in producing their first portfolio, and mounting and marketing a group exhibition to assiting the more seasoned artist in successfully navigating the contemporary art world.

Portfolio Development

TSA’s Portfolio Development course is designed for individuals seeking entry into post-secondary art programs such as fine arts, animation, graphic design, industrial design, fashion design, interior design and other art programs offered across the country that require a portfolio for entrance. The program focuses on building a portfolio of their visual artwork by providing studio-based projects, exploration and concept development in drawing, life drawing, painting, sculpture and portfolio preparation. Students will have the opportunity to present their ongoing projects in group critiques as well as having individual one-on-one critiques with the Program Coordinator and other faculty. The program will also include activities and excursions in the local area, group critiques, and discussions. Admission is based upon an interview with the Coordinator. Itis recommended that students take 1 other course during the term as acomplement to portfolio development course. Students will have the opportunity to discuss program interests with the Program Coordinator during the interview.

Professional Studio: The Practical Guide for Artists

This is a practical, two term course to guide emerging artists through the development of the skills necessary to enter the art community beyond the school environment. Students will write an artist’s statement and C.V., and learn how to photograph their work through hands-on workshops. This class will also put together a group exhibition to take place at an off-site gallery for which they will produce an invitation, send out press releases, install their works, and organize an opening. They will then be shown how to use this complete package to apply for exhibitions and grants. Throughout this course, the instructor will act as a consultant to the students, helping them to develop and clarify their ideas and determine how to best incorporate these into their work.

An advanced projects/independent study will be offered during the Winter session should the group want to form an artist collective and produce an independent exhibition to further enhance the hands-on experience of exhibiting their work.

Note: It is advised students take this course for the Fall and Winter terms.

Her own works explore the relationship between culture and landscape. Megan Williams has taught at the Toronto School of Art for over 20 years, offering courses in figurative drawing and painting, practical history of technique and the development of a personal creative voice. Administratively, she has served as Co-director of the School, in program development and in fundraising. Williams has also has taught at OCAD and currently teaches at Sheridan College in the School of Animation Arts and Design.

Williams is a recipient of two Greenshields grants (1981–82/1983–84) to study in Europe and is also a published author of a francophone collection of Canadian rhymes and songs from families from coast to coast, gathered during travels from Northern B.C. to the East Coast; she grew up as a bilingual Montrealer. She has also worked as a cartographer for the Near Eastern Studies Department of the U. of T., on site in the Nile Delta, Egypt, from 1981 to 1985.

Mona Shahid, a Toronto-based painter, has been an instructor at the Toronto School of Art since 2006. She has also held teaching positions at the Ontario College of Art and Design (Portfolio Clinic) and at Wayne State University, during her academic tenure there.

Shahid works primarily in encaustic, and although she has experience in diverse painting media, including fresco, she is most recognized for her encaustic work. She has exhibited her work in numerous galleries in Canada and the US, including the Edward Day Gallery in Toronto (1998–2006), Cambridge Galleries, and the Robert Kidd and Susanne Hilberry Galleries, both in the Detroit area. Shahid has also given several guest lectures, including at Wayne State University and the University of Toronto. Her current gallery affiliations include the Susanne Hilberry Gallery (Ferndale, MI), Gallery Project (Ann Arbor, MI) and Peter Robertson Gallery (Edmonton, AB). She has work in collections across Canada and the US, as well as some in Europe.

PAUL ROBERT TURNER

Paul Robert Turner has been an instructor at the Toronto School of Art since 2009. Born (1975) and raised in Kingston Ontario Canada, Paul Robert Turner attended the Ontario College of Art and Design (Toronto) from 1994 to 1998. Upon completion of the Drawing and Painting program, he then studied classical animation at Sheridan College and academic drawing at the Michael John Angel Academy of Art. Paul Robert Turner is a Canadian Figurative Oil Painter living and working in Toronto, Canada and is a co–founder of AWOL Collective, Gallery and Studios. Paul is a grant recipient of the Elizabeth Greenshields Foundation, the Ontario Arts Council, and the Canada Council for the Arts.

In 2007 and 2009 he was selected as an exhibiting finalist for The Kingston Prize, Canada's only national portrait competition. His work has been exhibited both nationally and internationally can be found in private collections in Canada, England, France, Israel and the United States.

Amy Swartz has been teaching at the Toronto School of Art since 2003. In addition she teaches studio courses at OCAD University.

Swartz creates highly detailed and meticulously crafted collections that combine both natural and artificial materials in sculpture, installation and drawing. Her work explores the idea of obsession — not only in the practice of art, but also in humanity’s perceived control over nature, life, and death. As R.M. Vaughan wrote, “Swartz makes even the tiniest deaths meaningful (and, yes, morbidly funny).”

ELIZABETH D‘AGOSTINO

Elizabeth D'Agostino is a Toronto-based Artist, Educator and Arts Administrator and has worked at TSA since 2004. As the Managing Director she coordinates the curriculum of all courses and programs as well as the daily operations of the school. Previously, Elizabeth was the Associate Dean at White Mountain Academy of the Arts she also directed the Printmaking Program. She has also taught at Ontario College of Art and Design University and the Ringling College of Art and Design.

D'Agostino's recent work combines printmaking with sculpture creating installations that examine human interaction within settings surrounded by environmental and physical change. Hybrid forms are created from human artifacts, anatomical references, insects, vegetable and animal life. Within these invented environment relationships in space and structure are re-purposed to create new narratives modified and influenced by their unique characteristics and surroundings.

Her work has been exhibited in Canada and internationally including Iziko: Museum of Cape Town, South Africa, Manhattan Graphics Center, New York, and The Print Center, Philadelphia. In addition, D'Agostino's prints can also be found in many private and public collections including the University of Changchun Jilin, China; Anchor Graphics at Columbia College Chicago, Illinois, Department of Foreign Affairs Canada, and Ernst and Young, Canada. Elizabeth was awarded an Honourable Mention in the 2014 National Open Studio Printmaking Awards, and was selected by the Department of Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development Canada to create a carpet design for the newly renovated Canada House in London, England.

RENEE CASTONGUAY

Renée Castonguay is a visual and performance artist and joined Toronto School of Art in 2013. She works closely with the TSA community, and coordinates volunteers and student/ special events throughout the year.

Her interest in dance/ movement and identity lead her to develop a stage presence for a print-minded studio practice. She investigates the relationship between the felt body and constructed things with a unique vocabulary of material theatricality, repetitive gesture, and accumulative tasks and actions.

She has participated in various International print exchange portfolio projects, collaborative artist books, and has been an active member and workshop facilitator in print shop collectives, community art centres, and performance production collectives in the US and Canada. She co-curated her BFA Thesis Exhibition at the ICA, Portland, ME, and produced the 15th Annual HIV/AIDS Art Exhibition at the VAV Gallery, Concordia University, Montréal.

TINA OEHMSEN-CLARK

Tina Oehmsen-Clark has been working as an artist and art educator since the early 80's and 90's respectively. She has been teaching Youth Studio, Portfolio Development, Drawing and Sculpture/Media Explorations at the Toronto School of Art since 2005. Tina also is an art catalyst in a special program at Avondale Secondary Alternative School.

Oehmsen-Clark’s work is an exploration of sound and music and visual art, including audio, drawing, sculpture, performance and sound installation. Her work has been shown and awarded in Germany, Denmark and Canada and most recently been exhibited at the Stephen Bulger Gallery, Propeller Centre for the Visual Arts, IndexG and Robert Kananaj Gallery.

TINA POPLAWSKI

Tina Poplawski has been an instructor at the Toronto School of Art since 1993.

Poplawski has exhibited in solo and group exhibitions in Ontario, Quebec and New York. Two galleries in Toronto, the V. MacDonnell Gallery and Lehmann Leskiw Fine Art, have represented Poplawski. Her work is found in North American and European collections both corporate and private. She is the recipient of many awards, including numerous Ontario Art Council Grants. Her work focuses on textured paintings, sculptural objects and paper works arranged into multi-faceted installations. She has been negotiating the cultural residue of war through her art practice for many years, leading her to a fascination with “debris” found in the botanical world.

TOBI ASMOUCHA

Tobi Asmoucha, a commercial and editorial freelance photographer, has been teaching at the Toronto School of Art since 1997. She also teaches at the Haliburton School of Art and Gallery 44.

Asmoucha’s images explore themes of community and the rituals that bind them, and have appeared in publications such as Canadian Geographic. Her documentary work has received a National Magazine Award and many nominations, as well as Ontario Arts Council and Toronto Jewish Arts Council grants. Currently, Asmoucha is a core member of PhotoSensitive, and her work is in collections at MOCCA and the Canadian War Museum.

TOM CAMPBELL

PAINTING

Tom Campbell, a Toronto-based painter, has been an instructor at the Toronto School of Art since 1989, with teaching stints at Sanford Fleming College, Sheridan College and the ROM. Since 2000, he has also travelled to the Aegean island of Ikaria every other spring to teach at the Ikarian Cultural Centre.

Campbell had his first major one-man show at Gallery Stratford in 1985, won the Kitchener-Waterloo Gallery prize for painting and joined the stable of artists at the Bau-Xi Gallery (Toronto and Vancouver). More recently, other projects of interest have included painting the giant shipwreck mural for John Greyson’s feature film Zero Patience and painting a CD cover for alternative pop band Stars. On television, he was featured in “Artists in the Urban Environment” forSpectrum and Star Portraits, which aired on Bravo. His most recent exhibitions have been in Ottawa at the Galleria St Laurent + HilI and in C Word (Craft in the Fine Arts) curated by Richard Mongiat at The Doris McCarthy Gallery, Toronto.

Thomas Hendry, a Toronto-based artist, has been an instructor at the Toronto School of Art since 1996. Hendry as been active as an art instructor for over a decade, and he believes that learning art should be positive discovery process. He practises this teaching philosophy beyond the Toronto School of Art at Sheridan College, The Haliburton School of Fine Arts, the AGO Gallery School, OCAD Outreach Program and the Toronto District School Board.

His drawings, shown in numerous exhibitions, use the means of traditional art to create contemporary images, images that address the beauty, mystery and complexity embodied in the human form.

Laura Moore, an international visual artist based in Toronto, has been teaching at the Toronto School of Art since 2007.

Her work has been exhibited in such venues as the St. Catharines City Hall Sculpture Garden, Ontario Science Centre, Thames Art Gallery in Chatham, Siena Art Institute in Siena, Italy, Shoshana Wayne Gallery in Santa Monica, CA, Peak Gallery in Toronto, Stride Gallery in Calgary and Anna Leonowens Gallery in Halifax. Moore’s work is also part of the permanent collections of the Thames Art Gallery and Uxbridge Public Sculpture Gardens. Joe Hambleton, a Canadian-born artist and educator, has been teaching at the Toronto School of Art since 2010. Previously, he taught at York University, Ontario College for Art and Design and Sheridan College.

As a storyteller, Hambleton uses art and the medium of video to create narratives that explore his personal experience and surroundings. By continually altering his process through research and experimentation, Hambleton furthers his understanding of the narrative devices and processes found in other media such as film, video games, music and literature. As Hambleton applies these narrative devices and processes to video, he progressively creates narrative structures that reflect his personality and influences. His work has been shown across North America, Europe and Asia and is represented by the Pari Nadimi Gallery.

JOHN BINGHAM

DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY

John Bingham, a photographer and graphic artist, has been teaching at the Toronto School of Art since 2005. Bingham established his career in traditional photography, but was quick to realize the potential of the newly evolving digital medium. As a result, his unique photographic style and understanding of Photoshop technique has made him a highly sought out industry professional and private tutor. Looking to share his knowledge with other artists, Bingham has found great satisfaction in helping new students of digital photography and Photoshop. His love of teaching has helped many students find fulfillment in photography and the digital arts.

Bingham’s photography practice is based in Canada and he has photographed on assignment in the Canadian Arctic, South America and China. John’s client list includes a number of the country’s largest corporations, professional theater companies and television producers. His photographs have been published in Canadian books and magazines, documentary films and are included in several private collections. Most recently he has developed a unique collection of digital based abstract prints that are being marketed successfully with an internet photo agency. For the last two years he has shown at the Contact Photography Festival and at the 2013 Toronto Urban Photography Festival.

Joe Fleming has been teaching at the Toronto School of Art since 2002. In addition, Fleming has previously been an instructor at OCAD and Sheridan College.

Fleming has been exhibiting internationally for over 15 years, with representation in Vancouver, Calgary, Singapore, Bali and Malaysia. His work has been included in many international art fairs: Rogue Wave Singapore, courtesy of Gallery Taksu, as well as FIAC in Paris, Arte Cologne in Germany, Scope in New York and TIAF in Toronto, all courtesy of Artcore. Jacqueline Treloar, an English-born artist and educator, has been teaching at the Toronto School of Art since 2006. Before moving to Canada, she spent twelve years running a textile design studio in Northern Italy.

Treloar’s work has won her several accolades over the years, including the Ontario Premier’s Award of Excellence, and her work has been featured in numerous periodicals, journals and books, such as Fibrearts, Surfacing, Ontario Craft, Azure andToronto Life. Since coming to Canada in 1984, Treloar has presented her work in exhibitions at the Ontario Crafts Council, the John B. Aird Gallery, the Homer Watson Gallery, the Museum for Textiles, the Art Gallery of Mississauga and the Library and Gallery in Cambridge, among other institutions.

FLORIAN JACOT

Florian Jacot is a visual artist who has been teaching at the Toronto School of Art since 2009. As well as instructing at TSA, Jacot has been teaching figure sculpture, artistic anatomy, and figurative drawing and painting since 2004 at such schools as Max the Mutt Animation School, Artist 25 Studio, Centennial College and Sheridan College.

Jacot works traditionally in fine arts and does freelance work digitally for the film and gaming industries. His work has been exhibited on several occasions in shows and galleries. In 1999, he received an award from The Sculpture Society of Canada for two of his sculptures.

Donnely Smallwood, a multi-media installation artist, has taught at the Toronto School of Art since 2001.

Using found imagery and text as a starting point, Smallwood transforms a wide range of disparate materials by cutting and rearranging. She is most interested in how collage processes, by isolating and transforming images, work to alter and intensify the reading of the material. Her collage and assemblage fragments come together to form book works, collage drawings and elaborate site-based installations.

Celia Neubauer, a Toronto-based painter, has been teaching painting at the Toronto School of Art since 2001. Previously, she taught at Queen’s University, Kingston, the University of Guelph and the University of Toronto School of Architecture and Landscape Architecture.

Her own works are influenced stylistically and conceptually by her interest in historical tradition. Her landscapes reflect a modernity that bridges both figurative realism and formal abstraction. BRIAN HOXHA

PAINTING

Brian Hoxha has been teaching at the Toronto School of Art since 2004. Hoxha is also an educator in watercolour and printmaking at the Art Gallery of Ontario and in the T.D.S.B. at Northern S.S., and a long-time member of Open Studio, the artist-run centre and print studio.

Hoxha’s work explores the beauty and solace of the natural world, whether in painting or making prints. He particularly finds constant inspiration by working on location in breathtakingly beautiful landscapes, as is evident in his journeys to Northern Ontario, Western Canada, Newfoundland and Montana.

Hoxha is currently being represented by Open Studio, Gallery 133, The Denison Gallery, Art Interiors, Tracey Capes F.A., Noveau Gallery in Regina, Saskatchewan, Gibson Fine Arts in Calgary and the Christina Parker Gallery in St. John’s N.F., as well as by a variety of arts consultants in Toronto.

Digital Art

Camille Turner, a Toronto-based media/performance artist and cultural producer, has been teaching at the Toronto School of Art since 2008.

Turner is the founder of Outerregion, a performance company that creates intercultural experiences that disrupt the expected and engage the public in unusual ways, and the co-founder of Year Zero One, a digital media organization. She has presented interventions, installations and public engagements throughout Canada, the UK, Senegal, Australia, Cuba, Jamaica, Germany and Mexico. Her most recent work brings hidden and erased histories and geographies to life through participatory events and locative media. HUSH HARBOUR, a sonic walk, animates historical Toronto’s Black geographies. TXTilecity, a collaboration with Year Zero One produced by the Textile Museum of Canada, maps the city of Toronto through its textile histories.

GILLIAN ILES

PAINTING

Gillian Iles, Toronto-based painter and sculptor, has been teaching painting and drawing at the Toronto School of Art since 2003. Previously, she taught at the Ontario College of Art and Design and the School of Animation, Arts and Design at Sheridan College.

Iles’s recent work combines paintings with sculptures, creating installations that incorporate both real and illusionary space. Her work is characterized by representational realism with selected abstraction. She draws her inspiration from the existence of social ideals, social orders and idealized lifestyles as they pertain to Western culture. Her work has been highlighted in Mix Magazine, Toronto Life Magazine, Now Magazine and Eye Weekly, as well as the National Post and The Globe and Mail. She has also been featured in the book Carte Blanche, Volume 2: Painting.

BRIAN BURNETT

Painting & Digital Art

Brian Burnett has been an art instructor at the Toronto School of Art since 1991. In addition, Burnett served as the school’s Director from 2000 to 2004 and has been a member of the Faculty Steering Committee since 1992.

Over approximately 35 years of exhibition, visceral, textured layerings of paint coupled with pattern and movement have been constants in the many paintings executed by Burnett. Through his early period with the Isaacs Gallery (1979–1989) and then with Gallery One (1989–2004), Burnett has displayed a sense of humour and irony in his ongoing investigation into the two-dimensional picture plane. In his most recent work, he has brought together his passion for painting and digital technology, creating digital paintings using Painter 12 software. The final works are limited-edition prints on canvas, mounted on birch panel, with an acrylic topcoat that creates a simulacrum of Burnett’s characteristic style and painting techniques. His work has been collected by the City of Toronto, General Electric, Government of Ontario, Metro Toronto Convention Centre, Art Gallery of Ontario, Art Gallery of Windsor, Art Gallery of Hamilton, Glenbow Museum and McLaren Art, as well as American Express, and is featured in many private collections.

Martha Eleen, a Toronto-based painter, has been teaching painting and drawing at Toronto School of Art since 2004.

Her own works explore the relationship between culture and landscape. Eleen’s paintings are represented in the permanent collection of the Art Gallery of Ontario, and have been exhibited in public galleries in Canada, the US, Mexico and Japan.  Her work has received critical attention in the form of curatorial essays, reviews and publications. She is currently represented by Loop Gallery in Toronto.

Megan Williams has taught at the Toronto School of Art for over 20 years, offering courses in figurative drawing and painting, practical history of technique and the development of a personal creative voice. Administratively, she has served as Co-director of the School, in program development and in fundraising. Williams has also has taught at OCAD and currently teaches at Sheridan College in the School of Animation Arts and Design.

Williams is a recipient of two Greenshields grants (1981–82/1983–84) to study in Europe and is also a published author of a francophone collection of Canadian rhymes and songs from families from coast to coast, gathered during travels from Northern B.C. to the East Coast; she grew up as a bilingual Montrealer. She has also worked as a cartographer for the Near Eastern Studies Department of the U. of T., on site in the Nile Delta, Egypt, from 1981 to 1985.

Mona Shahid, a Toronto-based painter, has been an instructor at the Toronto School of Art since 2006. She has also held teaching positions at the Ontario College of Art and Design (Portfolio Clinic) and at Wayne State University, during her academic tenure there.

Shahid works primarily in encaustic, and although she has experience in diverse painting media, including fresco, she is most recognized for her encaustic work. She has exhibited her work in numerous galleries in Canada and the US, including the Edward Day Gallery in Toronto (1998–2006), Cambridge Galleries, and the Robert Kidd and Susanne Hilberry Galleries, both in the Detroit area. Shahid has also given several guest lectures, including at Wayne State University and the University of Toronto. Her current gallery affiliations include the Susanne Hilberry Gallery (Ferndale, MI), Gallery Project (Ann Arbor, MI) and Peter Robertson Gallery (Edmonton, AB). She has work in collections across Canada and the US, as well as some in Europe.

Paul Robert Turner has been an instructor at the Toronto School of Art since 2009. Born (1975) and raised in Kingston Ontario Canada, Paul Robert Turner attended the Ontario College of Art and Design (Toronto) from 1994 to 1998. Upon completion of the Drawing and Painting program, he then studied classical animation at Sheridan College and academic drawing at the Michael John Angel Academy of Art. Paul Robert Turner is a Canadian Figurative Oil Painter living and working in Toronto, Canada and is a co–founder of AWOL Collective, Gallery and Studios. Paul is a grant recipient of the Elizabeth Greenshields Foundation, the Ontario Arts Council, and the Canada Council for the Arts.

In 2007 and 2009 he was selected as an exhibiting finalist for The Kingston Prize, Canada's only national portrait competition. His work has been exhibited both nationally and internationally can be found in private collections in Canada, England, France, Israel and the United States.

Amy Swartz has been teaching at the Toronto School of Art since 2003. In addition she teaches studio courses at OCAD University.

Swartz creates highly detailed and meticulously crafted collections that combine both natural and artificial materials in sculpture, installation and drawing. Her work explores the idea of obsession — not only in the practice of art, but also in humanity’s perceived control over nature, life, and death. As R.M. Vaughan wrote, “Swartz makes even the tiniest deaths meaningful (and, yes, morbidly funny).”

Elizabeth D'Agostino is a Toronto-based Artist, Educator and Arts Administrator and has worked at TSA since 2004. As the Managing Director she coordinates the curriculum of all courses and programs as well as the daily operations of the school. Previously, Elizabeth was the Associate Dean at White Mountain Academy of the Arts she also directed the Printmaking Program. She has also taught at Ontario College of Art and Design University and the Ringling College of Art and Design.

D'Agostino's recent work combines printmaking with sculpture creating installations that examine human interaction within settings surrounded by environmental and physical change. Hybrid forms are created from human artifacts, anatomical references, insects, vegetable and animal life. Within these invented environment relationships in space and structure are re-purposed to create new narratives modified and influenced by their unique characteristics and surroundings.

Her work has been exhibited in Canada and internationally including Iziko: Museum of Cape Town, South Africa, Manhattan Graphics Center, New York, and The Print Center, Philadelphia. In addition, D'Agostino's prints can also be found in many private and public collections including the University of Changchun Jilin, China; Anchor Graphics at Columbia College Chicago, Illinois, Department of Foreign Affairs Canada, and Ernst and Young, Canada. Elizabeth was awarded an Honourable Mention in the 2014 National Open Studio Printmaking Awards, and was selected by the Department of Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development Canada to create a carpet design for the newly renovated Canada House in London, England.

Renée Castonguay is a visual and performance artist and joined Toronto School of Art in 2013. She works closely with the TSA community, and coordinates volunteers and student/ special events throughout the year.

Her interest in dance/ movement and identity lead her to develop a stage presence for a print-minded studio practice. She investigates the relationship between the felt body and constructed things with a unique vocabulary of material theatricality, repetitive gesture, and accumulative tasks and actions.

She has participated in various International print exchange portfolio projects, collaborative artist books, and has been an active member and workshop facilitator in print shop collectives, community art centres, and performance production collectives in the US and Canada. She co-curated her BFA Thesis Exhibition at the ICA, Portland, ME, and produced the 15th Annual HIV/AIDS Art Exhibition at the VAV Gallery, Concordia University, Montréal.

Tina Oehmsen-Clark has been working as an artist and art educator since the early 80's and 90's respectively. She has been teaching Youth Studio, Portfolio Development, Drawing and Sculpture/Media Explorations at the Toronto School of Art since 2005. Tina also is an art catalyst in a special program at Avondale Secondary Alternative School.

Oehmsen-Clark’s work is an exploration of sound and music and visual art, including audio, drawing, sculpture, performance and sound installation. Her work has been shown and awarded in Germany, Denmark and Canada and most recently been exhibited at the Stephen Bulger Gallery, Propeller Centre for the Visual Arts, IndexG and Robert Kananaj Gallery.

Tina Poplawski has been an instructor at the Toronto School of Art since 1993.

Poplawski has exhibited in solo and group exhibitions in Ontario, Quebec and New York. Two galleries in Toronto, the V. MacDonnell Gallery and Lehmann Leskiw Fine Art, have represented Poplawski. Her work is found in North American and European collections both corporate and private. She is the recipient of many awards, including numerous Ontario Art Council Grants. Her work focuses on textured paintings, sculptural objects and paper works arranged into multi-faceted installations. She has been negotiating the cultural residue of war through her art practice for many years, leading her to a fascination with “debris” found in the botanical world.

Tobi Asmoucha, a commercial and editorial freelance photographer, has been teaching at the Toronto School of Art since 1997. She also teaches at the Haliburton School of Art and Gallery 44.

Asmoucha’s images explore themes of community and the rituals that bind them, and have appeared in publications such as Canadian Geographic. Her documentary work has received a National Magazine Award and many nominations, as well as Ontario Arts Council and Toronto Jewish Arts Council grants. TOM CAMPBELL | PAINTING

Tom Campbell, a Toronto-based painter, has been an instructor at the Toronto School of Art since 1989, with teaching stints at Sanford Fleming College, Sheridan College and the ROM. Since 2000, he has also travelled to the Aegean island of Ikaria every other spring to teach at the Ikarian Cultural Centre.

Campbell had his first major one-man show at Gallery Stratford in 1985, won the Kitchener-Waterloo Gallery prize for painting and joined the stable of artists at the Bau-Xi Gallery (Toronto and Vancouver). More recently, other projects of interest have included painting the giant shipwreck mural for John Greyson’s feature film Zero Patience and painting a CD cover for alternative pop band Stars. On television, he was featured in “Artists in the Urban Environment” forSpectrum and Star Portraits, which aired on Bravo. His most recent exhibitions have been in Ottawa at the Galleria St Laurent + HilI and in C Word (Craft in the Fine Arts) curated by Richard Mongiat at The Doris McCarthy Gallery, Toronto.

Thomas Hendry, a Toronto-based artist, has been an instructor at the Toronto School of Art since 1996. Hendry as been active as an art instructor for over a decade, and he believes that learning art should be positive discovery process. He practises this teaching philosophy beyond the Toronto School of Art at Sheridan College, The Haliburton School of Fine Arts, the AGO Gallery School, OCAD Outreach Program and the Toronto District School Board.

His drawings, shown in numerous exhibitions, use the means of traditional art to create contemporary images, images that address the beauty, mystery and complexity embodied in the human form.

Laura Moore, an international visual artist based in Toronto, has been teaching at the Toronto School of Art since 2007.

Her work has been exhibited in such venues as the St. Catharines City Hall Sculpture Garden, Ontario Science Centre, Thames Art Gallery in Chatham, Siena Art Institute in Siena, Italy, Shoshana Wayne Gallery in Santa Monica, CA, Peak Gallery in Toronto, Stride Gallery in Calgary and Anna Leonowens Gallery in Halifax. Moore’s work is also part of the permanent collections of the Thames Art Gallery and Uxbridge Public Sculpture Gardens. She is a returning guest member of Studio Pescarella in Pietrasanta, Italy, where she periodically spends time carving large-scale stone works.

Joe Hambleton, a Canadian-born artist and educator, has been teaching at the Toronto School of Art since 2010. Previously, he taught at York University, Ontario College for Art and Design and Sheridan College.

As a storyteller, Hambleton uses art and the medium of video to create narratives that explore his personal experience and surroundings. By continually altering his process through research and experimentation, Hambleton furthers his understanding of the narrative devices and processes found in other media such as film, video games, music and literature. As Hambleton applies these narrative devices and processes to video, he progressively creates narrative structures that reflect his personality and influences. His work has been shown across North America, Europe and Asia and is represented by the Pari Nadimi Gallery.

John Bingham, a photographer and graphic artist, has been teaching at the Toronto School of Art since 2005. Bingham established his career in traditional photography, but was quick to realize the potential of the newly evolving digital medium. As a result, his unique photographic style and understanding of Photoshop technique has made him a highly sought out industry professional and private tutor. Looking to share his knowledge with other artists, Bingham has found great satisfaction in helping new students of digital photography and Photoshop. His love of teaching has helped many students find fulfillment in photography and the digital arts.

Bingham’s photography practice is based in Canada and he has photographed on assignment in the Canadian Arctic, South America and China. John’s client list includes a number of the country’s largest corporations, professional theater companies and television producers. His photographs have been published in Canadian books and magazines, documentary films and are included in several private collections. Most recently he has developed a unique collection of digital based abstract prints that are being marketed successfully with an internet photo agency. For the last two years he has shown at the Contact Photography Festival and at the 2013 Toronto Urban Photography Festival.

Joe Fleming has been teaching at the Toronto School of Art since 2002. In addition, Fleming has previously been an instructor at OCAD and Sheridan College.

Fleming has been exhibiting internationally for over 15 years, with representation in Vancouver, Calgary, Singapore, Bali and Malaysia. His work has been included in many international art fairs: Rogue Wave Singapore, courtesy of Gallery Taksu, as well as FIAC in Paris, Arte Cologne in Germany, Scope in New York and TIAF in Toronto, all courtesy of Artcore. Fleming’s work is also included in many corporate and public collections: Trimark Mutual Funds, Honeywell Bull, American Barrick, Pricewaterhouse Coopers (Malaysia), HSBC Bank, Choo Mei Lin Cathay Organization Singapore, Australian High Commission, Canadian High Commission (Kuala Lumpur), the Edmonton Art Gallery, the Museum of Civilization (Hull, Québec) and the Holocaust Museum (LA). In 2009, Fleming’s work was included in Carte Blanche 2: Painting.

JACQUELINE TRELOAR | MIXED MEDIA

Jacqueline Treloar, an English-born artist and educator, has been teaching at the Toronto School of Art since 2006. Before moving to Canada, she spent twelve years running a textile design studio in Northern Italy.

Treloar’s work has won her several accolades over the years, including the Ontario Premier’s Award of Excellence, and her work has been featured in numerous periodicals, journals and books, such as Fibrearts, Surfacing, Ontario Craft, Azure andToronto Life. Since coming to Canada in 1984, Treloar has presented her work in exhibitions at the Ontario Crafts Council, the John B. Aird Gallery, the Homer Watson Gallery, the Museum for Textiles, the Art Gallery of Mississauga and the Library and Gallery in Cambridge, among other institutions.

Florian Jacot is a visual artist who has been teaching at the Toronto School of Art since 2009. As well as instructing at TSA, Jacot has been teaching figure sculpture, artistic anatomy, and figurative drawing and painting since 2004 at such schools as Max the Mutt Animation School, Artist 25 Studio, Centennial College and Sheridan College.

Jacot works traditionally in fine arts and does freelance work digitally for the film and gaming industries. His work has been exhibited on several occasions in shows and galleries. In 1999, he received an award from The Sculpture Society of Canada for two of his sculptures.

Donnely Smallwood, a multi-media installation artist, has taught at the Toronto School of Art since 2001.

Using found imagery and text as a starting point, Smallwood transforms a wide range of disparate materials by cutting and rearranging. She is most interested in how collage processes, by isolating and transforming images, work to alter and intensify the reading of the material. Her collage and assemblage fragments come together to form book works, collage drawings and elaborate site-based installations.

Celia Neubauer, a Toronto-based painter, has been teaching painting at the Toronto School of Art since 2001. Previously, she taught at Queen’s University, Kingston, the University of Guelph and the University of Toronto School of Architecture and Landscape Architecture.

Her own works are influenced stylistically and conceptually by her interest in historical tradition. Her landscapes reflect a modernity that bridges both figurative realism and formal abstraction. Her works are included in the collections of BMO Financial Group, Canada Life, Four Seasons, Dubai, Donovan Collection, Hewlett-Packard Canada Ltd., Live Entertainment of Canada Inc., Art Gallery of Mississauga, Ontario Municipal Employees Retirement Board, Tory Tory DesLauriers & Binnington, Toronto, and other private collections. Neubauer’s paintings have also been featured in various publications, such as Abstract Painting in Canada, House and Home and Carte Blanche 2: Painting.

BRIAN HOXHA | PAINTING

Brian Hoxha has been teaching at the Toronto School of Art since 2004. Hoxha is also an educator in watercolour and printmaking at the Art Gallery of Ontario and in the T.D.S.B. at Northern S.S., and a long-time member of Open Studio, the artist-run centre and print studio.

Hoxha’s work explores the beauty and solace of the natural world, whether in painting or making prints. He particularly finds constant inspiration by working on location in breathtakingly beautiful landscapes, as is evident in his journeys to Northern Ontario, Western Canada, Newfoundland and Montana.

Hoxha is currently being represented by Open Studio, Gallery 133, The Denison Gallery, Art Interiors, Tracey Capes F.A., Noveau Gallery in Regina, Saskatchewan, Gibson Fine Arts in Calgary and the Christina Parker Gallery in St. John’s N.F., as well as by a variety of arts consultants in Toronto.

Camille Turner, a Toronto-based media/performance artist and cultural producer, has been teaching at the Toronto School of Art since 2008.

Turner is the founder of Outerregion, a performance company that creates intercultural experiences that disrupt the expected and engage the public in unusual ways, and the co-founder of Year Zero One, a digital media organization. She has presented interventions, installations and public engagements throughout Canada, the UK, Senegal, Australia, Cuba, Jamaica, Germany and Mexico. Her most recent work brings hidden and erased histories and geographies to life through participatory events and locative media. HUSH HARBOUR, a sonic walk, animates historical Toronto’s Black geographies. TXTilecity, a collaboration with Year Zero One produced by the Textile Museum of Canada, maps the city of Toronto through its textile histories.

GILLIAN ILES | PAINTING

Gillian Iles, Toronto-based painter and sculptor, has been teaching painting and drawing at the Toronto School of Art since 2003. Previously, she taught at the Ontario College of Art and Design and the School of Animation, Arts and Design at Sheridan College.

Iles’s recent work combines paintings with sculptures, creating installations that incorporate both real and illusionary space. Her work is characterized by representational realism with selected abstraction. She draws her inspiration from the existence of social ideals, social orders and idealized lifestyles as they pertain to Western culture. Her work has been highlighted in Mix Magazine, Toronto Life Magazine, Now Magazine and Eye Weekly, as well as the National Post and The Globe and Mail. She has also been featured in the book Carte Blanche, Volume 2: Painting.

BRIAN BURNETT | Painting & Digital Art

Brian Burnett has been an art instructor at the Toronto School of Art since 1991. In addition, Burnett served as the school’s Director from 2000 to 2004 and has been a member of the Faculty Steering Committee since 1992.

Over approximately 35 years of exhibition, visceral, textured layerings of paint coupled with pattern and movement have been constants in the many paintings executed by Burnett. Through his early period with the Isaacs Gallery (1979–1989) and then with Gallery One (1989–2004), Burnett has displayed a sense of humour and irony in his ongoing investigation into the two-dimensional picture plane. In his most recent work, he has brought together his passion for painting and digital technology, creating digital paintings using Painter 12 software. The final works are limited-edition prints on canvas, mounted on birch panel, with an acrylic topcoat that creates a simulacrum of Burnett’s characteristic style and painting techniques. His work has been collected by the City of Toronto, General Electric, Government of Ontario, Metro Toronto Convention Centre, Art Gallery of Ontario, Art Gallery of Windsor, Art Gallery of Hamilton, Glenbow Museum and McLaren Art, as well as American Express, and is featured in many private collections.

Over the past 40 years, the Toronto School of Art (TSA) has established itself as one of the most distinguished alternative arts schools in the city. While our history alone sets us apart, it’s our ideology that truly defines us. We believe in taking an organic approach to the arts. The Diversity and Outreach Committee is committed to developing principles ensuring diversity and equity practices at the Toronto School of Art. Our new school is located on the second floor of an old Toronto School Board public school. The Diversity and Outreach Committee is working to resolve this issue and planning access for all in the future.
