TSA offers students a robust array of courses to choose from that will further develop their artistic vision and ability at any level of experience. Students benefit from a hands-on, studio-based curriculum led by passionate, professional artists. TSA courses are for adults (age 18+), Youth Studio offers sections for tweens and teens ages 11-13 and 14-17.

This program provides guidance and mentorship from a faculty of practicing artists, and the essential time, space, community, and critical feedback to develop and present one's body of work.

Fellowship Program

The TSA Fellowship Program is designed for students of all ages and levels of experience who demonstrate a promise in the visual arts, offering a professional, supportive network for individuals looking to pursue a career as a practicing artist.

TSA Fellowships are offered in: DrawingPainting, Sculpture, and Interdisciplinary, but are not necessarily dedicated to one specific discipline.

Fellows dedicate themselves to their practice in a particular area of study with the support of a TSA Faculty Mentor while continuing to expand style, technique, process, method, and concept.  For each discipline there is a recommended stream of courses to select from.

 

The TSA Fellowship Program consists of 3 tiers, each have 8 courses for completion within 3 years:

Tier 1 - Introduction (8 courses)

Tier 2 - Intermediate (8 courses, 5 majors, 3 minors)

Tier 3 - Advanced (8 courses, 7 majors, 1 minor)

Special Status | TSA Graduates - (6 courses)

All 8, 10, 12-week, and one-week intensive courses are eligible and equal 1 course.  TSA 6-week courses and 3-day intensives are also eligible, however, two of these short-format courses equal 1 course.

 

DELIVERABLES

  • Access to TSA courses, curriculum guidance, and mentoring over a 2-3 year period;
  • Written critical feedback from each course instructor;
  • Consultations, individual critiques, and mentoring sessions from TSA Faculty Mentor;
  • Group critiques with faculty, students, and fellows;

Drawing

Our curriculum can accommodate students from every skill level, whether you’re an absolute beginner or a more advanced student. Students will strengthen their ability to perceive and translate the visual world into their own artistic expression. Technical skills are strengthened through methods such as direct observation, perspective drawing, working from the model, and experimental mark-making and material use.

Experimental Drawing

This drawing workshop addresses non-traditional techniques and creative exploration in mark making using various drawing materials.  Through intensive and sustained investigation, students will explore varying methods for drawing and determine how accidental mishap can lead to unexpected possibility.  In addition, participants will be encouraged to explore new and unorthodox techniques while making use of opportunities for inventive discovery.

Note: This is a 6-week course.

Anatomy and Figure Drawing

Explore the human body while learning to recognize and name bony landmarks and muscle groups visible on the model and yourself. This course enables students to explore the skeletal and muscular systems by drawing directly from a skeleton, bones, and a live model. Enhance your awareness of bumps and indentations on the surface of the body, and understand which are formed by bone and muscle. Gestures, sketches, and studies help students focus on structure, function, and proportion. Media: Coloured pencil, conté, charcoal, newsprint, drawing paper, tracing paper.

Introduction to Life Drawing: Fast Poses

This course covers the essentials of life drawing in a dynamic format of expressive poses. It is ideal for beginners wanting to establish good technique in proportion, structure and movement and for the aspiring animator. Poses are up to 20 minutes long. It is designed to teach students the skills necessary to render the figure in three dimensions, in both wet and dry media. Intermediate Drawing

This eight-week course is designed to further develop the student’s observational drawing skill set. Through in class projects students will work toward completed drawings with various types of dry media on various surfaces.  Topics will include dry media and surface exploration, 3-point perspective, rendering surfaces through still life, and long pose format life drawing.  With a blend of traditional and contemporary observational drawing techniques an emphasis will be placed on exploring the expressive potential of shape and line treatment and it’s relationship to value and light.

Introduction to Life Drawing: Sustained Poses

This course will cover the essentials of interpreting the figure in a sustained manner.  A loose gesture, proportion, and sensitive line quality set the stage for creating dramatic 3-dimensional form. Subtle values of tone and colour will establish mood, atmosphere, and character. Poses will be up to 2 classes (6 hours) long. One key skill set is taught each week. This course is ideal for those with basic figure drawing skills and offers a strategic approach to interpretation. 

Note: It is recommended students have taken a recent course in Life Drawing, or have approx. 24 weeks of current life drawing experience. This course is 6 weeks long in the Fall 2015 term and 8 weeks long in the Winter 2016 term.

Introduction to Drawing

This course will introduce students to the fundamentals of drawing. Emphasis will be placed on observational drawing, the development of perceptual skills and technical facility, as well as the exploration of drawing as an expressive medium and conceptual tool. Through in-class assignments and exercises, students will explore fundamentals of drawing such as negative and positive space, proportion, line, contour, value, volume, natural perspective, gesture, composition and mark making. A variety of drawing media will be used throughout the course to familiarize students with a range of materials and their possibilities. Critique, discussions, presentations and demonstrations will be fundamental to the working and learning structure of the class. This course also studies the human figure; a nude model will be used.

Introduction to Portrait Drawing

This course provides students with a foundation of drawing skills using black and white and colour drawing media, such as soft pastels and pastel pencils. During the first part of the course, anatomy, drawing techniques, composition, and observational skills are stressed. The focus in the second part is on developing the student’s approach to portraiture. This may include rendering a likeness using expressiveness, or experimenting with the genre. Examples of artists’ works will be used to illustrate the diverse approaches to portraiture.

Perspective Drawing

This course will examine in detail the principles of one point, two-point, three-point perspective and their general application. Students will focus primarily on how to create and render interior and exterior spaces, with a secondary emphasis on large object rendering in reference to these spaces. This workshop is geared toward assisting people with realist or representational drawing and painting studio art works, as well as people pursuing interior design, game concept and design, digital painting, animation in general, illustration, storyboarding, 2D architectural rendering or general 2D concept and design. Students will achieve an understanding of how the illusion of perspective works, and the ability to solve perspective problems in their artistic practice.

Drawing as a Contemporary Practice

This course is designed to give students a better idea of the scope of possibilities of various drawing media. Assignments will be geared toward expanding the student’s notions of drawing, both technically and conceptually. Drawing from the figure will be de-emphasized in order to find other sources for making work. There will be assignments using mylar sheets to create layered images and large scale drawing as well as simple altered book formats. Slide and video presentations will show students how other artists have used drawing in many challenging formats.

Note: Students should have some drawing experience, or completed drawing or mixed media courses.

Beyond Basic Life Drawing

The principal objective of this course is to assist students in deepening their engagement with figurative representation. To this end, in-class time will be structured around increasingly long poses. Students will be encouraged to work as large as possible, and emphasis will be placed on overall composition. Emphasis will also be placed on the content and context of figurative artwork. It is hoped that by the end of this course, students will have honed their observational, compositional, and mark-making skills, and will have gained experience to move from study of the model to fully realized compositions of personal significance.

Sculpture

Our diverse sculpture curriculum provides students with a robust range of classical and contemporary techniques and media. Sculpt in clay, carve in stone and wood, build and assemble a kinetic piece with found objects. Learn the foundation of sculpture and develop your technical skills while exploring methods such as modelling, additive construction, planar construction, carving, found-object assemblage and installation.

Figure Sculpture

Employing the classical approach, students will develop their sculptural and observational skills. Students will learn about armature building, materials, and tools for sculpting. This course will follow a step-by-step approach to figure sculpting and will allow students to develop their skills while studying a specific body part at a time, and the entire body in the end. Students will work from direct observation using classical plaster casts of anatomical figures, the human skeleton, and then move to the life model. Each body part study will be broken down into simple stages of Mass conception and/or Ecorche (anatomy) with an emphasis on proportion, planar structure, bony landmarks, muscle groups, and points of origin and insertion.

Note: This course is suitable for beginners & intermediate sculptors. This course begins the 2nd Wednesday of the summer term, starting on July 15.

Sculpture Explorations: Materials and Form

Sculpture Explorations: Materials and Form is an introduction to a broad range of approaches to object making. Through image presentations, demonstrations and hands-on work time in the studio, students will develop technical skills using both traditional and non-traditional materials. These materials include plaster, wire, plasticine, and found objects. Projects will introduce students to the elements of composition in three dimensions as well as the means by which a sculpture can communicate, such as through material, process, line, texture, mass and weight. Additional methods explored will include modeling, additive construction, planar construction, found-object assemblage and installation. An experimental approach to object-making and a sense of discovery are encouraged.

Figure Casting

This course is dedicated to the casting of clay sculpture into a permanent material such as plaster, resin and cold cast metals. The course will guide students through the entire process of turning a clay sculpture into a solid, lasting sculpture. Student will start from a previously completed clay sculpture and will go through the process of creating an appropriate mold type for it, such as waste mold or silicon mold. Once the mold is completed, a cast in the chosen material will be done. Finally, depending on the desired look, a patina finish will be applied. Various techniques of finishing and patinas will be explored. For larger size sculptures, an extra materials cost may be required.

Note: Students must bring an existing figure sculpture of their own to cast. This course is an appropriate follow-up course to the Figure Sculpture course, or equivalent.

Painting

Courses range from introductory and life painting to more contemporary and abstract techniques in oil, acrylic, encaustic, watercolour and water-based media. Students will be challenged to articulate themselves using different styles and subjects within the discipline, as courses are geared towards absolute beginner through advanced skill levels.

Colour Mixing

Based in colour theory and the primary colour palette, the content of this course thoroughly investigates colour mixing with an emphasis on tertiary colours and colour relationships. Additional work on colour reactions can be provided. Through structured exercises and practice, students will learn to see the elements that compose any observed colour and will develop their ability to make intuitive choices regarding values and colour temperature.

Note: This is an introductory level course that is suitable for painters who want to build their colour-language skills. This is a 6-week course.

Many contemporary artists are reinvigorating the visual language of Water Media with new subject matter, large-scale work and informal mixtures of traditional materials.  The aim of this course is to introduce some of these exciting options to those new to Water Soluble Media.

During the Fall Term we will look at the basic technical principles of working with watercolor, ink, gouache, water-soluble pencils, crayons and graphite on paper and discuss simple methods to intermix these media.  

The Winter Term will integrate the use of acrylic emulsions such as Acrylic Matte Medium, Molding Paste, and Gesso with traditional water media in new and unusual ways. The technical investigations from the Fall Session will be expanded to encourage working on a larger scale, as well as utilizing contemporary compositional strategies.   This course will include instructor demonstrations, student investigations, and 1 scheduled group discussions.  Those artists’ whose works concentrate in part or in whole on Water Media will be also be introduced.  

Note: This course is suitable for beginners & intermediate painters.

Painting the Clothed Figure

Students will explore observational figure painting through 2 poses of a clothed model lasting 8 weeks. We will discuss proportion, shape, value, light and colour theory, both in reference to the understanding of tertiary colours of skin and also in achieving convincing drapery and fabric. This is a painting course focused primarily on acrylic paint or oil paint. Various methods of application using indirect painting process will be investigated. Whether a more representational or abstracted approach, students will be encouraged to explore various aesthetic styles other than their choosing. An emphasis will be placed on creating volume and depth while exploring the expressive potential of shape and brush treatment and it's relationship to colour and light.

Fundamental Oils

This course provides both beginner and advanced students with practical and technical knowledge of the uses of oil paint. Designed to complement Painting 1, this course will familiarize students with oil paints, a range of mediums, and their specific functions. Demonstrations relating to technique will be ongoing, detailing both traditional and contemporary styles of applications and the aesthetic qualities specific to each. Upon completion, students should possess a greater sensitivity to and knowledge of the medium that will take them beyond their formative training. Issues of health and safety relating to the use of handling oil paints and mediums will also be discussed.

Acrylic Explorations: Wax Effects

Acrylic paint has the ability to mimic other materials. In this course we will explore how it can replicate the appearance of encaustic. Encaustic painting, also known as hot wax painting, involves using heated beeswax to which either powdered pigments or oil paints are added. Acrylic matte mediums and gels will be used to create the effect, the depth, the sheen and the colour of wax. We will also work with “Acrylic Ground for Pastels” using the drawing mediums Graphite, Powdered Graphite and Conte. We will utilize Matt Gels to create the look of poured Microcrystalline Wax topcoats. These materials are easier to use and pose less of a health threat to those with sensitivities, while still giving the illusion and luster of encaustic.

Note: A comfortable level of understanding in painting and drawing.

Students will explore observational Figure and Portrait Painting in poses that last one to two weeks. The focus is on alla prima gestural painting that captures character after preparing a solid foundation of good proportion and body structure. Using oil or acrylic, this painting course promotes the ability to capture drama wherever it is expressed in the body. This is a no-solvents class and assistance will be provided for oil painters needing to adapt to a toxin free technique. The instructor offers a clearly structured technique broken down into stages that are learned at your pace and in your style.

Note: Students should have had recent instruction in introductory painting as well as figure drawing. This course puts the two together in a dynamic atmosphere.

This is an ongoing, mixed-level studio course with an emphasis on development and expansion of visual language skills. Students are encouraged to work on structured exercises that lead to developing individual projects. We will explore fundamental painterly concerns such as light and shadow, colour relationships, paint handling, composition, abstraction, gesture, energy, intention and personal expression. Working from observation of still-life, figure and landscape, classes include structured exercises, inspirational lectures based on contemporary and historical painting, demonstrations, and critiques with the emphasis on painting time in a supportive environment. Media: Acrylic or oil paint. *Linseed oil and Odorless Mineral Spirits (OMS) will be used in this class.

Fundamental Acrylics

The Fall Term of this foundation course will introduce students to the important relationship between acrylic pigments and acrylic mediums and gels.  Mediums and gels offer the artist a world of control in changing acrylic colours, creating glazes, extending paints, building texture and altering surface finishes. The range of mediums explored will encompass GAC 100 (for diluting paint), Fluid Matt Medium, Soft and Regular Gels, High Solid Gel, as well as Acrylic Glazing Liquid (extends drying time of paint).  This course will examine ways in which to start a painting, blending techniques, colour mixing, creating transparent and opaque effects, emulating the look of oil paint, encaustic (wax), creating watercolour like stains on raw canvas and experimenting with metallic pigments. Students will have a deeper understanding of the importance of using acrylic mediums to enhance the appearance of their paintings and will afford them the confidence to approach any basic painting class.

The Winter Term of this course will investigate acrylic pastes and specialty acrylic gels that used in conjunction with acrylic colours will broaden working properties and expand creative possibilities.  Choosing from a vast range of products available, the class will experiment with Light and Hard Molding Paste, Coarse and Fine Pumice Gel, Crackle Paste, GAC 200 (for non-absorbent surfaces like metal) and GAC 400 (to stiffen fabric) and GAC 800 (for pouring techniques).  This course will discuss alternative painting surfaces, such as wood, Plexiglas and fabric as well as examining how pastes can be used to create textured foundations for painting.  Students will learn how to strengthen their basic skills with discussions on paint handling, composition and choosing colour palettes.  Upon completion of this course students will have a solid understanding of the endless possibilities that acrylic paints, mediums, gels and pastes can make available to them.

Introduction to Painting

This course teaches foundation skills in the technical manipulation of paint, as well as in colour, structure, and content. The importance of direct visual observation and the creation of space and light illusion will be stressed. Beyond Basic Painting

his course focuses on expanding students’ ability to work independently and creatively, and to challenge themselves in the field of painting. Student’s conceptual and technical developments in either images or abstractions will be addressed on a one-on-one basis with the instructor. The instructor will review via demonstrations, the proper setup of painted surface, stains and textured layers. Students should be prepared to start working in the first class. If a student is unsure of where to start the instructor will provide a beginning point. Media: All Paint Mediums. The instructor provides support for both Acrylics and Oils and their respective mediums. Oil painters are encouraged to engage in a safe studio practice via contemporary non-toxic Oil mediums. Students should be prepared to begin painting in the first class.

Abstraction in Oils

To abstract is to generalize. This course is an appropriate follow-up to Fundamental Oils and Basic Painting. It introduces students to a broad spectrum of abstract formats and provides an informative backdrop for stylistic approaches being practiced by working artists today. A broad survey will commence highlighting key artists whose individual techniques reinforce the conceptual processes involved in abstract oil painting. Studio projects will proceed in an ordered sequence to maximize technical development while introducing students to formal concerns associated with image development and colour synthesis. Upon completion, each student should possess an introductory knowledge of abstract painting that will better prepare him or her for further study in painting. 

Note: It is recommended that students have taken a course in Fundamental Oils, Introduction to Painting, or have had some oil painting experience. Appropriate follow-up courses include 315 Intermediate Painting. This is an 8-week course.

Abstraction in Acrylics

In this course, students will explore abstract painting and thinking while working with acrylic paints. Studio Painting 2 & 3

Studio Painting 2 & 3 (Plus) will introduce large-scale painting approaches to works greater than 20" X 24".  Approaches to painting in both Oils and Acrylics will be reviewed and demonstrated by the instructor. Emphasis will be on developing multi-layered paintings that will include; foundation stains, textured layering, impasto mark making, acrylics and oils* in one painting, and lastly, glazes.

Areas that will be covered within the course are:

  • Substrates and the advantages of wood verses canvas.
  • Images and or Abstraction.
  • Building source images via drawings, sketch paintings, photographs and digital manipulations
  • Projecting for scaling from small to large
  • Titles and their ability to obscure or enhance a finished work

This discipline includes numerous methods, such as collage, assemblage, drawing, image transfers, rubbings, stencilling, frottage, book arts and other mixed media techniques. Printmaking is also offered and includes relief, etching and drypoint techniques.

Printmaking Explorations: Relief and Etching

The course will focus on using traditional relief printmaking processes and techniques as well as basic intaglio techniques in line etching and sugar lift. Relief processes will include b/w images on elephant linoleum. This course will provide students with an understanding of the broad visual language of printmaking and the purpose and application of multiples in making art.

Explorations in Art Making

In this introductory course, participants will learn basic art making techniques. This course is geared toward students who are interested in the visual arts and/or have never taken an art class before. Mixed Media Explorations: Textiles

This six-week course provides a basic introduction to textile processes and techniques associated with surface design and fabric manipulation as a means of expressing ideas. Practical work is complemented by critical, historical and theoretical information, which assists the students in understanding elements of contemporary mixed media textile work. This course will cover processes involved in the surface decoration and manipulation of fabric including painting, image transfers, the use of rollers and stencils, resist and batik and marbling to create altered surfaces and personal fiberart pieces.

Collage Explorations 2

This course is intended for students who have successfully completed Collage Explorations 1 and for those who wish to further explore their explorations. Students will work with a wide range of found materials, which are transformed through the process of collage, assemblage and installation. This course is structured thematically, with a series of projects based on one or more topics for exploration. Some of the past investigations include fairytales, mapping and cities, and the sensory body. Students can choose to work on structured assignments or in a self-directed way with a view towards developing a cohesive body of work. Throughout the course, reference will be made to the history of collage and assemblage as well as collage and assemblage as a contemporary art practice. These references will inform and enrich art making, dialogue, and discussion.

Note: This course is an appropriate follow-up to the Collage Explorations 1 course. If students have not taken this, they should have equivalent previous experience.

Collage Explorations 1

This course will introduce the fundamentals of creating a wide range of collage works. The collage process is based on material selected, isolated and then transformed through recombination and arrangement. We will work with a variety of intriguing collage materials such as photo-based imagery, maps and other paper ephemera to fine washi papers and fabric.  We will transform this material through elaborate cutting and re-assemblage with glues, mediums and stitching, as well as in combination with painting and drawing. We will explore both image-based works and abstraction through compositions using pattern and repetition, layering and transparency, as well as creating three-dimensional space in our collages.  This course will also explore the rich history of collage, from its origins in paper cutting and folk traditions to Dada and DIY attitudes in contemporary art practice. Collage Explorations offers all students an opportunity to expand their thinking about composition, process and materials and offers exciting art making possibilities for students who are coming from drawing and painting practices.

Six-week courses offer students a more condensed, but still comprehensive, hands-on learning experience.

Architectural Photography and the Urban City

Since the invention of the medium photographers have been drawn to buildings, monuments and the churning energy of the urban spaces as worthy subjects for their lens. This class introduces photographers to the best of architectural photography and the techniques necessary to achieve stunning urban imagery. Students will learn how to use their digital cameras and lenses for the unique task of photographing architectural subjects. They will also learn the Photoshop techniques that will allow them to express their vision of our urban environment. This course is suitable for beginner and intermediate level students. 

 

Note: A digital camera of any type is essential for this course and some knowledge of computers is helpful but not essential. This course uses Photoshop CS6.

Portrait Digital Photography

This course will focus on lighting and different approaches to portraiture.  Students will photograph using available light and different times of day.  There will also be a session with strobe lighting.  Environmental portraiture, conceptual portraits, and self-portraits will be covered during this workshop.  Feedback of class assignments will be one-on-one, and also in the form of constructive class critiques.  Some retouching techniques, and burning and dodging in Photoshop will be covered.

Based in colour theory and the primary colour palette, the content of this course thoroughly investigates colour mixing with an emphasis on tertiary colours and colour relationships. Sculpture Explorations: Materials and Form

Sculpture Explorations: Materials and Form is an introduction to a broad range of approaches to object making. Through image presentations, demonstrations and hands-on work time in the studio, students will develop technical skills using both traditional and non-traditional materials. These materials include plaster, wire, plasticine, and found objects. Projects will introduce students to the elements of composition in three dimensions as well as the means by which a sculpture can communicate, such as through material, process, line, texture, mass and weight. Additional methods explored will include modeling, additive construction, planar construction, found-object assemblage and installation. An experimental approach to object-making and a sense of discovery are encouraged.

Introduction to Life Drawing: Sustained Poses

This course will cover the essentials of interpreting the figure in a sustained manner.  A loose gesture, proportion, and sensitive line quality set the stage for creating dramatic 3-dimensional form. Subtle values of tone and colour will establish mood, atmosphere, and character. Poses will be up to 2 classes (6 hours) long. One key skill set is taught each week. This course is ideal for those with basic figure drawing skills and offers a strategic approach to interpretation. 

Note: It is recommended students have taken a recent course in Life Drawing, or have approx. 24 weeks of current life drawing experience. This course is 6 weeks long in the Fall 2015 term and 8 weeks long in the Winter 2016 term.

Painting the Clothed Figure

Students will explore observational figure painting through 2 poses of a clothed model lasting 8 weeks. We will discuss proportion, shape, value, light and colour theory, both in reference to the understanding of tertiary colours of skin and also in achieving convincing drapery and fabric. This is a painting course focused primarily on acrylic paint or oil paint. Various methods of application using indirect painting process will be investigated. Whether a more representational or abstracted approach, students will be encouraged to explore various aesthetic styles other than their choosing. An emphasis will be placed on creating volume and depth while exploring the expressive potential of shape and brush treatment and it's relationship to colour and light.

Experiencing Contemporary Art: Gallery Hop

Explore the evolution of art from 1965 to the present day with gallery tours, slide lectures, and selected readings. This dynamic course is designed to facilitate the understanding and interpretation of contemporary art by introducing students to some of the themes, issues, and structures of current art practices. The emphasis is definitely on visiting the galleries exhibiting the most challenging, relevant art, but well-selected readings and pertinent slide lectures also clarify the defining characteristics of modernist, postmodernist, and contemporary art. The stylistic and material diversity of the contemporary is surveyed in this course: practices ranging from traditional media like painting and sculpture to new media like digital works and installations are considered and contextualized, while numerous artistic modes such as appropriation, conceptualism, pluralism, identity art, and relationalism are examined. Lively discussions during and after gallery visits, lectures, visiting artists and readings will also be a key component of this course.

Character Design in Clay (Ages 14-17)

This week-long workshop introduces students to the creation of iconic characters and creatures from the film, animation, video game and comic book industries. Students will learn how to sculpt in oil based and polymer clay and build wire armatures to support the pose of their character. Topics such as proportion, structure, anatomy, surface detailing and design concepts will be covered. Students will be working from observations looking at various references material, as well from imagination. At the end of the workshop, students will have the option of adding colour to their work by experimenting with painting and patina finishes.

Mask Making (Ages 11-13)

Mask making is traditionally bound to the materials available, from wood, sea shells, plants, stone, bone, hide, metal etc. In this urban masks making course students will use recycling materials which will be assembled, then plastered and finally painted and decorated. The students will learn to collect and edit materials as well as connecting them with wire, tape, hot glue and plaster. Painting and decorating the masks will be the final step. An introduction to the history of masks will be given at the beginning of the course.

This course will introduce students to the fundamentals of drawing. Emphasis will be placed on observational drawing, the development of perceptual skills and technical facility, as well as the exploration of drawing as an expressive medium and conceptual tool. Through in-class assignments and exercises, students will explore fundamentals of drawing such as negative and positive space, proportion, line, contour, value, volume, natural perspective, gesture, composition and mark making. A variety of drawing media will be used throughout the course to familiarize students with a range of materials and their possibilities. Critique, discussions, presentations and demonstrations will be fundamental to the working and learning structure of the class. This course also studies the human figure; a model will be used.

This course will introduce students to the fundamentals of life drawing, including: proportion, composition, shape, gesture, line, and value. This course is designed to expose the student to several different methods and approaches to contemporary life drawing and it’s application. Using dry media (pencil, charcoal, conte, pastel etc.) the various topics will include: illustrative and animation type drawing, academic realist drawing, contemporary expressive drawing, abstraction and basic anatomy. These different methods of approach will be used as a platform for different skill building exercises in a fun and energetic environment, building toward several final drawings at the end of the week. 

Note: All models will be dressed in athletic wear or equivalent.

Fundamentals of Drawing for Teens (Ages 14-17)

This course will introduce students to the fundamentals of drawing, including contour, gesture, value, perspective, foreshortening, surface treatment, and composition. Emphasis will be placed on learning to see and experience the world from the artist’s viewpoint. Classes will be structured combinations of shorter exercises and longer, more developed drawings. A variety of wet and dry drawing media will be used.

Sketch and Sculpt (Ages 11 -13)

This course is designed for 11 to 13 year olds and will offer a variety of materials (wood, paper, wire, clay, etc.) to build, construct and sculpt 3-dimensional objects, sculptures and masks. The process of idea-finding as well as documenting the finished artwork will be done through sketching and drawing using various media (charcoal, ink, markers, etc.), including working in a sketchbook. Through demonstrations and examples the students will learn a variety of techniques as well as historic and contemporary contexts.

Life Drawing for Teens (Ages 14-17)

This course will introduce students to the fundamentals of life drawing, including: proportion, composition, shape, gesture, line, and value. This course is designed to expose the student to several different methods and approaches to contemporary life drawing and it’s application. Using dry media (pencil, charcoal, conte, pastel etc.) the various topics will include: illustrative and animation type drawing, academic realist drawing, contemporary expressive drawing, abstraction and basic anatomy. These different methods of approach will be used as a platform for different skill building exercises in a fun and energetic environment, building toward several final drawings at the end of the week. 

Note: All models will be dressed in summer athletic wear or equivalent. This course is for students aged 14- 17.

Mix it Up: Drawing, Painting and Mixed Media (Ages 11 - 13)

This fun and challenging course for 11 to 13 year-olds offers young artists an exciting opportunity to develop and expand their drawing skills and to explore collage and mixed media processes.  Each class will be structured with drawing fundamentals taught primarily in the morning sessions (quality of line, contour, gesture, basic shapes, tonal drawing, perspective), and then each afternoon, expand the drawing experience to include collage and mixed media. The classes will also investigate expressive and experimental mark making as well as drawing and collage from fantasy imagery.

Students will work with a wide range of drawing materials (such as charcoal, oil pastels and conte); ink and paint media as well as intriguing found imagery and materials for collage.  Throughout the week, we will investigate drawing, collage and mixed media through a wide range of subjects and themes such as favourite objects and the still life, flowers, foliage and natural specimens, the human figure, landscape and weird and wonderful imaginary worlds.

Youth Art Studio (Ages 14-17), 2-Week Intensive

This fun and exciting program allows students ages 14 -17 years old to explore their imagination and sample various techniques with a hands on approach in traditional and contemporary methods, ultimately find their own voice through the arts. Through (life) drawing, painting, sculpture/object making, collage, assemblage, mixed media, students learn technical skills, knowledge of contemporary visual arts and art history, and are encouraged to develop their own personal creative process. Field trips to museums and galleries as well as exhibition are also an integral part of the program. 

Note: This course runs Mon-Thu 10am-4pm and Fri 10am-1pm. (Incl. 30-min lunch break). Intended to be a 2-week course, but if your child is unable to attend both weeks and would like to register for one week only, please contact the office for options.

Youth Art Studio (Ages 11-13)

923 Youth Art Studio is a visual art course designed for 11-13 year olds. Through drawing, painting, printing, collage, and 3-dimensional work, students will be introduced to various techniques and media in order to develop their own artistic language and expression. This includes drawing (one life drawing session with a clothed model) and painting from observation and imagination exploring line, shape, texture, perspective and composition as well as preparing surfaces and colour mixing. Collage, assemblage, and 3-dimensional explorations will include various materials including paper, wire, wood, found objects and natural elements. We will also explore mono printing, creating stamps and designing textures and patterns. The students will be introduced to artists throughout history including contemporary artists in connection with their projects, and will also go on field trips to museums and/or galleries to see and discuss the artwork on site.

Using programs in the latest Adobe Creative Suite, students can also focus their studies on digital illustration and sculpting, digital photography and editing, and digital portfolio building.

Architectural Photography and the Urban City

Since the invention of the medium photographers have been drawn to buildings, monuments and the churning energy of the urban spaces as worthy subjects for their lens. This class introduces photographers to the best of architectural photography and the techniques necessary to achieve stunning urban imagery. Students will learn how to use their digital cameras and lenses for the unique task of photographing architectural subjects. They will also learn the Photoshop techniques that will allow them to express their vision of our urban environment. This course is suitable for beginner and intermediate level students. 

 

Note: A digital camera of any type is essential for this course and some knowledge of computers is helpful but not essential. This course uses Photoshop CS6.

Portrait Digital Photography

This course will focus on lighting and different approaches to portraiture.  Students will photograph using available light and different times of day.  There will also be a session with strobe lighting.  Environmental portraiture, conceptual portraits, and self-portraits will be covered during this workshop.  Feedback of class assignments will be one-on-one, and also in the form of constructive class critiques.  Some retouching techniques, and burning and dodging in Photoshop will be covered.

This introductory level course focuses on Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop, the industry standard software programs used by artists and designers alike. All aspects of Illustrator will be introduced, and students will learn how to create vector illustrations, edit and import image files, design layouts for graphic posters, magazine spreads, book covers, packaging, pattern making, perspective drawing, typographic design, etc, and how to set up files for professional output. All available Illustrator tools will be thoroughly explained in an ongoing per-project basis. Photoshop will also be addressed. It is used by many industries/professions and outputs to a wide range files types. Among the options explored in Photoshop are: editing image files from a variety of sources; creating digital paintings and/or illustrations; laying out & designing projects for print, web and/or devices; distressing images and text; and creating and applying batch actions to folders of images. This course uses CS6 Master Collection.

Experiencing Contemporary Art: Gallery Hop

Explore the evolution of art from 1965 to the present day with gallery tours, slide lectures, and selected readings. This dynamic course is designed to facilitate the understanding and interpretation of contemporary art by introducing students to some of the themes, issues, and structures of current art practices. The emphasis is definitely on visiting the galleries exhibiting the most challenging, relevant art, but well-selected readings and pertinent slide lectures also clarify the defining characteristics of modernist, postmodernist, and contemporary art. The stylistic and material diversity of the contemporary is surveyed in this course: practices ranging from traditional media like painting and sculpture to new media like digital works and installations are considered and contextualized, while numerous artistic modes such as appropriation, conceptualism, pluralism, identity art, and relationalism are examined. Lively discussions during and after gallery visits, lectures, visiting artists and readings will also be a key component of this course.

Professional Practice and Image Development

These courses offer individuals an opportunity to delve into both practical and exploratory ground in their artistic endeavors.  Concentrating on the serious and pragmatic path to becoming a professional practicing artist, areas are addressed that may not arise in classes covering more hands-on techniques.  Here, we provide opportunities such as guiding the beginner in producing their first portfolio, and mounting and marketing a group exhibition to assiting the more seasoned artist in successfully navigating the contemporary art world.

Professional Studio: The Practical Guide for Artists

Professional Studio guides emerging artists through the development of the skills necessary to enter the art community beyond the school environment. Topics covered will be how to: Put an art practice plan into action, write an Artist Statement and CV, document and archive art activity, locate a venue and develop a target audience, display, sell and ship art, access services for artists including grants, exhibition venues etc. As part of the program schedule, a special topics presentation, featuring a prominent member of the arts community, will highlight an aspect of studio life as it relates to the course.

Portfolio Development

This course is intended for students who wish to put together a portfolio of their visual art work with the goal of gaining admission into a high school Visual Arts program or Post-Secondary Program in Animation, Graphic Design, Illustrations, Industrial Design, Fashion Design, Interior Design or other fine art programs offered across the country. This course focuses on both studio-based projects as well as practical content. Students will learn about building foundation skills in drawing, painting, sculpture with the combination of process and exploration. Portfolio Development

TSA’s Portfolio Development Course is designed for individuals seeking entry into post-secondary art programs such as fine arts, animation, graphic design, industrial design, fashion design, interior design and other art programs offered across the country that require a portfolio for entrance. The program focuses on building a portfolio of their visual artwork by providing studio-based projects, exploration, and concept development in drawing, life drawing, painting, sculpture, and portfolio preparation.Students will have the opportunity to present their ongoing projects in group critiques as well as having individual one-on-one critiques with the Program Coordinator and other faculty.

The program will also include activities and excursions in the local area, group critiques, and discussions.  The Portfolio Development program includes 1 additional class from TSA’s regular curriculum. It is recommended that students take a class that specialized in their area of interest. Students will have the opportunity to discuss program interests and various courses with the Program Coordinator during the interview. Admission is based upon an interview with the Coordinator.  The Monday Portfolio Development course and tutorial are mandatory.

PAINTING

Roberta McNaughton was born 1966 in Toronto, Ontario and has degrees from both the Ontario College of Art and Design and Guelph University. She is also presently an MFA candidate at OCADU.

Her work has been exhibited in both public and commercial galleries in Toronto, and commercial galleries in Los Angeles, and London, England. McNaughton's paintings are in the collection of several corporations such as TD Bank; they are also in the collection of the National Archives in Ottawa. She has received several Ontario Arts Council grants and currently shows with Katharine Mulherin Contemporary Art Projects in Toronto.

Pearl Van Geest is a practicing artist and experienced art educator who has designed and taught courses, workshops and educational programming for art schools, public art galleries, businesses, special events and public schools and universities since graduating from the Ontario College of Art and Design in 1996. In both her artistic practice and pedagogical approach she is deeply committed to the creative process itself and the possibilities that develop for innovation and expression.

Van Geest’s paintings are part of the Canada Council’s Art Bank Collection. She was shortlisted for the RBC’s Canadian Painting Prize in 2003 and was included in the Magenta Foundation’s 2008 publication on Canadian painters, Carte Blanche: Vol. 2.  She has been awarded grants from Ontario and Canada Arts Councils and was recently was selected to be the City of Guelph’s inaugural Artist in the Community 2014.

Her own works explore the relationship between culture and landscape. Megan Williams has taught at the Toronto School of Art for over 20 years, offering courses in figurative drawing and painting, practical history of technique and the development of a personal creative voice. Administratively, she has served as Co-director of the School, in program development and in fundraising. Williams has also has taught at OCAD and currently teaches at Sheridan College in the School of Animation Arts and Design.

Williams is a recipient of two Greenshields grants (1981–82/1983–84) to study in Europe and is also a published author of a francophone collection of Canadian rhymes and songs from families from coast to coast, gathered during travels from Northern B.C. to the East Coast; she grew up as a bilingual Montrealer. She has also worked as a cartographer for the Near Eastern Studies Department of the U. of T., on site in the Nile Delta, Egypt, from 1981 to 1985.

Paul Robert Turner has been an instructor at the Toronto School of Art since 2009. Born (1975) and raised in Kingston Ontario Canada, Paul Robert Turner attended the Ontario College of Art and Design (Toronto) from 1994 to 1998. Upon completion of the Drawing and Painting program, he then studied classical animation at Sheridan College and academic drawing at the Michael John Angel Academy of Art. Paul Robert Turner is a Canadian Figurative Oil Painter living and working in Toronto, Canada and is a co–founder of AWOL Collective, Gallery and Studios. Paul is a grant recipient of the Elizabeth Greenshields Foundation, the Ontario Arts Council, and the Canada Council for the Arts.

In 2007 and 2009 he was selected as an exhibiting finalist for The Kingston Prize, Canada's only national portrait competition. His work has been exhibited both nationally and internationally can be found in private collections in Canada, England, France, Israel and the United States.

ELIZABETH D‘AGOSTINO

MANAGING DIRECTOR

Elizabeth D'Agostino is a Toronto-based Artist, Educator and Arts Administrator and has worked at TSA since 2004. As the Managing Director she coordinates the curriculum of all courses and programs as well as the daily operations of the school. Previously, Elizabeth was the Associate Dean at White Mountain Academy of the Arts she also directed the Printmaking Program. She has also taught at Ontario College of Art and Design University and the Ringling College of Art and Design.

D'Agostino's recent work combines printmaking with sculpture creating installations that examine human interaction within settings surrounded by environmental and physical change. Hybrid forms are created from human artifacts, anatomical references, insects, vegetable and animal life. Within these invented environment relationships in space and structure are re-purposed to create new narratives modified and influenced by their unique characteristics and surroundings.

Her work has been exhibited in Canada and internationally including Iziko: Museum of Cape Town, South Africa, Manhattan Graphics Center, New York, and The Print Center, Philadelphia. In addition, D'Agostino's prints can also be found in many private and public collections including the University of Changchun Jilin, China; Anchor Graphics at Columbia College Chicago, Illinois, Department of Foreign Affairs Canada, and Ernst and Young, Canada. Elizabeth was awarded an Honourable Mention in the 2014 National Open Studio Printmaking Awards, and was selected by the Department of Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development Canada to create a carpet design for the newly renovated Canada House in London, England.

Stacy Lewis joined the Toronto School of Art office in 2013. She was previously an art administrator for four years at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum where she coordinated Family Programs and aspects of the museum's school outreach artist residency program, Learning Through Art. She has also been an art educator for the past decade in museum, classroom and studio settings, focusing on children ages 4-12, and currently also works as an educator at the Art Gallery of Ontario.

Her art practice variously includes photography, painting and mixed media. In her work, she explores nostalgia, interconnectedness and happenstance through the everyday, overlooked and forgotten. She has exhibited in group shows in New York City and Toronto and her work hangs in private collections in Canada, the U.S., the Netherlands and Brazil.

RENEE CASTONGUAY

STUDENT AND EVENTS COORDINATOR

Renée Castonguay is a visual and performance artist and joined Toronto School of Art in 2013. She works closely with the TSA community, and coordinates volunteers and student/ special events throughout the year.

Her interest in dance/ movement and identity lead her to develop a stage presence for a print-minded studio practice. She investigates the relationship between the felt body and constructed things with a unique vocabulary of material theatricality, repetitive gesture, and accumulative tasks and actions.

She has participated in various International print exchange portfolio projects, collaborative artist books, and has been an active member and workshop facilitator in print shop collectives, community art centres, and performance production collectives in the US and Canada. She co-curated her BFA Thesis Exhibition at the ICA, Portland, ME, and produced the 15th Annual HIV/AIDS Art Exhibition at the VAV Gallery, Concordia University, Montréal.

TINA OEHMSEN-CLARK

Tina Oehmsen-Clark has been working as an artist and art educator since the early 80's and 90's respectively. She has been teaching Youth Studio, Portfolio Development, Drawing and Sculpture/Media Explorations at the Toronto School of Art since 2005. Tina also is an art catalyst in a special program at Avondale Secondary Alternative School.

Oehmsen-Clark’s work is an exploration of sound and music and visual art, including audio, drawing, sculpture, performance and sound installation. Her work has been shown and awarded in Germany, Denmark and Canada and most recently been exhibited at the Stephen Bulger Gallery, Propeller Centre for the Visual Arts, IndexG and Robert Kananaj Gallery.

TINA POPLAWSKI

PAINTING

Tina Poplawski has been an instructor at the Toronto School of Art since 1993.

Poplawski has exhibited in solo and group exhibitions in Ontario, Quebec and New York. Two galleries in Toronto, the V. MacDonnell Gallery and Lehmann Leskiw Fine Art, have represented Poplawski. Her work is found in North American and European collections both corporate and private. She is the recipient of many awards, including numerous Ontario Art Council Grants. Her work focuses on textured paintings, sculptural objects and paper works arranged into multi-faceted installations. She has been negotiating the cultural residue of war through her art practice for many years, leading her to a fascination with “debris” found in the botanical world.

TOBI ASMOUCHA

Tobi Asmoucha, a commercial and editorial freelance photographer, has been teaching at the Toronto School of Art since 1997. She also teaches at the Haliburton School of Art and Gallery 44.

Asmoucha’s images explore themes of community and the rituals that bind them, and have appeared in publications such as Canadian Geographic. Her documentary work has received a National Magazine Award and many nominations, as well as Ontario Arts Council and Toronto Jewish Arts Council grants. Currently, Asmoucha is a core member of PhotoSensitive, and her work is in collections at MOCCA and the Canadian War Museum.

TOM CAMPBELL

PAINTING

Tom Campbell, a Toronto-based painter, has been an instructor at the Toronto School of Art since 1989, with teaching stints at Sanford Fleming College, Sheridan College and the ROM. Since 2000, he has also travelled to the Aegean island of Ikaria every other spring to teach at the Ikarian Cultural Centre.

Campbell had his first major one-man show at Gallery Stratford in 1985, won the Kitchener-Waterloo Gallery prize for painting and joined the stable of artists at the Bau-Xi Gallery (Toronto and Vancouver). More recently, other projects of interest have included painting the giant shipwreck mural for John Greyson’s feature film Zero Patience and painting a CD cover for alternative pop band Stars. On television, he was featured in “Artists in the Urban Environment” forSpectrum and Star Portraits, which aired on Bravo. His most recent exhibitions have been in Ottawa at the Galleria St Laurent + HilI and in C Word (Craft in the Fine Arts) curated by Richard Mongiat at The Doris McCarthy Gallery, Toronto.

THOMAS HENDRY

Thomas Hendry, a Toronto-based artist, has been an instructor at the Toronto School of Art since 1996. Hendry as been active as an art instructor for over a decade, and he believes that learning art should be positive discovery process. He practises this teaching philosophy beyond the Toronto School of Art at Sheridan College, The Haliburton School of Fine Arts, the AGO Gallery School, OCAD Outreach Program and the Toronto District School Board.

His drawings, shown in numerous exhibitions, use the means of traditional art to create contemporary images, images that address the beauty, mystery and complexity embodied in the human form.

Laura Moore, an international visual artist based in Toronto, has been teaching at the Toronto School of Art since 2007.

Her work has been exhibited in such venues as the St. Catharines City Hall Sculpture Garden, Ontario Science Centre, Thames Art Gallery in Chatham, Siena Art Institute in Siena, Italy, Shoshana Wayne Gallery in Santa Monica, CA, Peak Gallery in Toronto, Stride Gallery in Calgary and Anna Leonowens Gallery in Halifax. Moore’s work is also part of the permanent collections of the Thames Art Gallery and Uxbridge Public Sculpture Gardens. She is a returning guest member of Studio Pescarella in Pietrasanta, Italy, where she periodically spends time carving large-scale stone works.

JOE HAMBLETON

Joe Hambleton, a Canadian-born artist and educator, has been teaching at the Toronto School of Art since 2010. Previously, he taught at York University, Ontario College for Art and Design and Sheridan College.

As a storyteller, Hambleton uses art and the medium of video to create narratives that explore his personal experience and surroundings. By continually altering his process through research and experimentation, Hambleton furthers his understanding of the narrative devices and processes found in other media such as film, video games, music and literature. As Hambleton applies these narrative devices and processes to video, he progressively creates narrative structures that reflect his personality and influences. His work has been shown across North America, Europe and Asia and is represented by the Pari Nadimi Gallery.

JOHN BINGHAM

DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY

John Bingham, a photographer and graphic artist, has been teaching at the Toronto School of Art since 2005. Bingham established his career in traditional photography, but was quick to realize the potential of the newly evolving digital medium. As a result, his unique photographic style and understanding of Photoshop technique has made him a highly sought out industry professional and private tutor. Looking to share his knowledge with other artists, Bingham has found great satisfaction in helping new students of digital photography and Photoshop. His love of teaching has helped many students find fulfillment in photography and the digital arts.

Bingham’s photography practice is based in Canada and he has photographed on assignment in the Canadian Arctic, South America and China. John’s client list includes a number of the country’s largest corporations, professional theater companies and television producers. His photographs have been published in Canadian books and magazines, documentary films and are included in several private collections. Most recently he has developed a unique collection of digital based abstract prints that are being marketed successfully with an internet photo agency. For the last two years he has shown at the Contact Photography Festival and at the 2013 Toronto Urban Photography Festival.

Joe Fleming has been teaching at the Toronto School of Art since 2002. In addition, Fleming has previously been an instructor at OCAD and Sheridan College.

Fleming has been exhibiting internationally for over 15 years, with representation in Vancouver, Calgary, Singapore, Bali and Malaysia. His work has been included in many international art fairs: Rogue Wave Singapore, courtesy of Gallery Taksu, as well as FIAC in Paris, Arte Cologne in Germany, Scope in New York and TIAF in Toronto, all courtesy of Artcore. JACQUELINE TRELOAR

Jacqueline Treloar, an English-born artist and educator, has been teaching at the Toronto School of Art since 2006. Before moving to Canada, she spent twelve years running a textile design studio in Northern Italy.

Treloar’s work has won her several accolades over the years, including the Ontario Premier’s Award of Excellence, and her work has been featured in numerous periodicals, journals and books, such as Fibrearts, Surfacing, Ontario Craft, Azure andToronto Life. Since coming to Canada in 1984, Treloar has presented her work in exhibitions at the Ontario Crafts Council, the John B. Aird Gallery, the Homer Watson Gallery, the Museum for Textiles, the Art Gallery of Mississauga and the Library and Gallery in Cambridge, among other institutions.

FLORIAN JACOT

SCULPTURE

Florian Jacot is a visual artist who has been teaching at the Toronto School of Art since 2009. As well as instructing at TSA, Jacot has been teaching figure sculpture, artistic anatomy, and figurative drawing and painting since 2004 at such schools as Max the Mutt Animation School, Artist 25 Studio, Centennial College and Sheridan College.

Jacot works traditionally in fine arts and does freelance work digitally for the film and gaming industries. His work has been exhibited on several occasions in shows and galleries. In 1999, he received an award from The Sculpture Society of Canada for two of his sculptures.

Donnely Smallwood, a multi-media installation artist, has taught at the Toronto School of Art since 2001.

Using found imagery and text as a starting point, Smallwood transforms a wide range of disparate materials by cutting and rearranging. She is most interested in how collage processes, by isolating and transforming images, work to alter and intensify the reading of the material. Her collage and assemblage fragments come together to form book works, collage drawings and elaborate site-based installations.

Celia Neubauer, a Toronto-based painter, has been teaching painting at the Toronto School of Art since 2001. Previously, she taught at Queen’s University, Kingston, the University of Guelph and the University of Toronto School of Architecture and Landscape Architecture.

Her own works are influenced stylistically and conceptually by her interest in historical tradition. Her landscapes reflect a modernity that bridges both figurative realism and formal abstraction. Her works are included in the collections of BMO Financial Group, Canada Life, Four Seasons, Dubai, Donovan Collection, Hewlett-Packard Canada Ltd., Live Entertainment of Canada Inc., Art Gallery of Mississauga, Ontario Municipal Employees Retirement Board, Tory Tory DesLauriers & Binnington, Toronto, and other private collections. BRIAN HOXHA

PAINTING & PRINTMAKING

Brian Hoxha has been teaching at the Toronto School of Art since 2004. Hoxha is also an educator in watercolour and printmaking at the Art Gallery of Ontario and in the T.D.S.B. at Northern S.S., and a long-time member of Open Studio, the artist-run centre and print studio.

Hoxha’s work explores the beauty and solace of the natural world, whether in painting or making prints. He particularly finds constant inspiration by working on location in breathtakingly beautiful landscapes, as is evident in his journeys to Northern Ontario, Western Canada, Newfoundland and Montana.

Hoxha is currently being represented by Open Studio, Gallery 133, The Denison Gallery, Art Interiors, Tracey Capes F.A., Noveau Gallery in Regina, Saskatchewan, Gibson Fine Arts in Calgary and the Christina Parker Gallery in St. John’s N.F., as well as by a variety of arts consultants in Toronto.

GILLIAN ILES

PAINTING

Gillian Iles, Toronto-based painter and sculptor, has been teaching painting and drawing at the Toronto School of Art since 2003. Previously, she taught at the Ontario College of Art and Design and the School of Animation, Arts and Design at Sheridan College.

Iles’s recent work combines paintings with sculptures, creating installations that incorporate both real and illusionary space. Her work is characterized by representational realism with selected abstraction. She draws her inspiration from the existence of social ideals, social orders and idealized lifestyles as they pertain to Western culture. Her work has been highlighted in Mix Magazine, Toronto Life Magazine, Now Magazine and Eye Weekly, as well as the National Post and The Globe and Mail. She has also been featured in the book Carte Blanche, Volume 2: Painting.

BRIAN BURNETT

Painting & Digital Art

Brian Burnett has been an art instructor at the Toronto School of Art since 1991. In addition, Burnett served as the school’s Director from 2000 to 2004 and has been a member of the Faculty Steering Committee since 1992.

Over approximately 35 years of exhibition, visceral, textured layerings of paint coupled with pattern and movement have been constants in the many paintings executed by Burnett. Through his early period with the Isaacs Gallery (1979–1989) and then with Gallery One (1989–2004), Burnett has displayed a sense of humour and irony in his ongoing investigation into the two-dimensional picture plane. In his most recent work, he has brought together his passion for painting and digital technology, creating digital paintings using Painter 12 software. The final works are limited-edition prints on canvas, mounted on birch panel, with an acrylic topcoat that creates a simulacrum of Burnett’s characteristic style and painting techniques. His work has been collected by the City of Toronto, General Electric, Government of Ontario, Metro Toronto Convention Centre, Art Gallery of Ontario, Art Gallery of Windsor, Art Gallery of Hamilton, Glenbow Museum and McLaren Art, as well as American Express, and is featured in many private collections.

Roberta McNaughton was born 1966 in Toronto, Ontario and has degrees from both the Ontario College of Art and Design and Guelph University. She is also presently an MFA candidate at OCADU.

Her work has been exhibited in both public and commercial galleries in Toronto, and commercial galleries in Los Angeles, and London, England. McNaughton's paintings are in the collection of several corporations such as TD Bank; they are also in the collection of the National Archives in Ottawa. She has received several Ontario Arts Council grants and currently shows with Katharine Mulherin Contemporary Art Projects in Toronto.

Pearl Van Geest is a practicing artist and experienced art educator who has designed and taught courses, workshops and educational programming for art schools, public art galleries, businesses, special events and public schools and universities since graduating from the Ontario College of Art and Design in 1996. In both her artistic practice and pedagogical approach she is deeply committed to the creative process itself and the possibilities that develop for innovation and expression.

Van Geest’s paintings are part of the Canada Council’s Art Bank Collection. She was shortlisted for the RBC’s Canadian Painting Prize in 2003 and was included in the Magenta Foundation’s 2008 publication on Canadian painters, Carte Blanche: Vol. 2.  She has been awarded grants from Ontario and Canada Arts Councils and was recently was selected to be the City of Guelph’s inaugural Artist in the Community 2014.

Martha Eleen, a Toronto-based painter, has been teaching painting and drawing at Toronto School of Art since 2004.

Her own works explore the relationship between culture and landscape. Megan Williams has taught at the Toronto School of Art for over 20 years, offering courses in figurative drawing and painting, practical history of technique and the development of a personal creative voice. Administratively, she has served as Co-director of the School, in program development and in fundraising. Williams has also has taught at OCAD and currently teaches at Sheridan College in the School of Animation Arts and Design.

Williams is a recipient of two Greenshields grants (1981–82/1983–84) to study in Europe and is also a published author of a francophone collection of Canadian rhymes and songs from families from coast to coast, gathered during travels from Northern B.C. to the East Coast; she grew up as a bilingual Montrealer. She has also worked as a cartographer for the Near Eastern Studies Department of the U. of T., on site in the Nile Delta, Egypt, from 1981 to 1985.

Paul Robert Turner has been an instructor at the Toronto School of Art since 2009. Born (1975) and raised in Kingston Ontario Canada, Paul Robert Turner attended the Ontario College of Art and Design (Toronto) from 1994 to 1998. Upon completion of the Drawing and Painting program, he then studied classical animation at Sheridan College and academic drawing at the Michael John Angel Academy of Art. Paul Robert Turner is a Canadian Figurative Oil Painter living and working in Toronto, Canada and is a co–founder of AWOL Collective, Gallery and Studios. Paul is a grant recipient of the Elizabeth Greenshields Foundation, the Ontario Arts Council, and the Canada Council for the Arts.

In 2007 and 2009 he was selected as an exhibiting finalist for The Kingston Prize, Canada's only national portrait competition. His work has been exhibited both nationally and internationally can be found in private collections in Canada, England, France, Israel and the United States.

Elizabeth D'Agostino is a Toronto-based Artist, Educator and Arts Administrator and has worked at TSA since 2004. As the Managing Director she coordinates the curriculum of all courses and programs as well as the daily operations of the school. Previously, Elizabeth was the Associate Dean at White Mountain Academy of the Arts she also directed the Printmaking Program. She has also taught at Ontario College of Art and Design University and the Ringling College of Art and Design.

D'Agostino's recent work combines printmaking with sculpture creating installations that examine human interaction within settings surrounded by environmental and physical change. Hybrid forms are created from human artifacts, anatomical references, insects, vegetable and animal life. Within these invented environment relationships in space and structure are re-purposed to create new narratives modified and influenced by their unique characteristics and surroundings.

Her work has been exhibited in Canada and internationally including Iziko: Museum of Cape Town, South Africa, Manhattan Graphics Center, New York, and The Print Center, Philadelphia. In addition, D'Agostino's prints can also be found in many private and public collections including the University of Changchun Jilin, China; Anchor Graphics at Columbia College Chicago, Illinois, Department of Foreign Affairs Canada, and Ernst and Young, Canada. Elizabeth was awarded an Honourable Mention in the 2014 National Open Studio Printmaking Awards, and was selected by the Department of Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development Canada to create a carpet design for the newly renovated Canada House in London, England.

Stacy Lewis joined the Toronto School of Art office in 2013. She was previously an art administrator for four years at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum where she coordinated Family Programs and aspects of the museum's school outreach artist residency program, Learning Through Art. She has also been an art educator for the past decade in museum, classroom and studio settings, focusing on children ages 4-12, and currently also works as an educator at the Art Gallery of Ontario.

Her art practice variously includes photography, painting and mixed media. In her work, she explores nostalgia, interconnectedness and happenstance through the everyday, overlooked and forgotten. She has exhibited in group shows in New York City and Toronto and her work hangs in private collections in Canada, the U.S., the Netherlands and Brazil.

RENEE CASTONGUAY | STUDENT AND EVENTS COORDINATOR

Renée Castonguay is a visual and performance artist and joined Toronto School of Art in 2013. She works closely with the TSA community, and coordinates volunteers and student/ special events throughout the year.

Her interest in dance/ movement and identity lead her to develop a stage presence for a print-minded studio practice. She investigates the relationship between the felt body and constructed things with a unique vocabulary of material theatricality, repetitive gesture, and accumulative tasks and actions.

She has participated in various International print exchange portfolio projects, collaborative artist books, and has been an active member and workshop facilitator in print shop collectives, community art centres, and performance production collectives in the US and Canada. She co-curated her BFA Thesis Exhibition at the ICA, Portland, ME, and produced the 15th Annual HIV/AIDS Art Exhibition at the VAV Gallery, Concordia University, Montréal.

Tina Oehmsen-Clark has been working as an artist and art educator since the early 80's and 90's respectively. She has been teaching Youth Studio, Portfolio Development, Drawing and Sculpture/Media Explorations at the Toronto School of Art since 2005. Tina also is an art catalyst in a special program at Avondale Secondary Alternative School.

Oehmsen-Clark’s work is an exploration of sound and music and visual art, including audio, drawing, sculpture, performance and sound installation. Her work has been shown and awarded in Germany, Denmark and Canada and most recently been exhibited at the Stephen Bulger Gallery, Propeller Centre for the Visual Arts, IndexG and Robert Kananaj Gallery.

TINA POPLAWSKI | PAINTING

Tina Poplawski has been an instructor at the Toronto School of Art since 1993.

Poplawski has exhibited in solo and group exhibitions in Ontario, Quebec and New York. Two galleries in Toronto, the V. MacDonnell Gallery and Lehmann Leskiw Fine Art, have represented Poplawski. Her work is found in North American and European collections both corporate and private. She is the recipient of many awards, including numerous Ontario Art Council Grants. Her work focuses on textured paintings, sculptural objects and paper works arranged into multi-faceted installations. She has been negotiating the cultural residue of war through her art practice for many years, leading her to a fascination with “debris” found in the botanical world.

Tobi Asmoucha, a commercial and editorial freelance photographer, has been teaching at the Toronto School of Art since 1997. She also teaches at the Haliburton School of Art and Gallery 44.

Asmoucha’s images explore themes of community and the rituals that bind them, and have appeared in publications such as Canadian Geographic. Her documentary work has received a National Magazine Award and many nominations, as well as Ontario Arts Council and Toronto Jewish Arts Council grants. Currently, Asmoucha is a core member of PhotoSensitive, and her work is in collections at MOCCA and the Canadian War Museum.

TOM CAMPBELL | PAINTING

Tom Campbell, a Toronto-based painter, has been an instructor at the Toronto School of Art since 1989, with teaching stints at Sanford Fleming College, Sheridan College and the ROM. Since 2000, he has also travelled to the Aegean island of Ikaria every other spring to teach at the Ikarian Cultural Centre.

Campbell had his first major one-man show at Gallery Stratford in 1985, won the Kitchener-Waterloo Gallery prize for painting and joined the stable of artists at the Bau-Xi Gallery (Toronto and Vancouver). More recently, other projects of interest have included painting the giant shipwreck mural for John Greyson’s feature film Zero Patience and painting a CD cover for alternative pop band Stars. On television, he was featured in “Artists in the Urban Environment” forSpectrum and Star Portraits, which aired on Bravo. His most recent exhibitions have been in Ottawa at the Galleria St Laurent + HilI and in C Word (Craft in the Fine Arts) curated by Richard Mongiat at The Doris McCarthy Gallery, Toronto.

Thomas Hendry, a Toronto-based artist, has been an instructor at the Toronto School of Art since 1996. Hendry as been active as an art instructor for over a decade, and he believes that learning art should be positive discovery process. He practises this teaching philosophy beyond the Toronto School of Art at Sheridan College, The Haliburton School of Fine Arts, the AGO Gallery School, OCAD Outreach Program and the Toronto District School Board.

His drawings, shown in numerous exhibitions, use the means of traditional art to create contemporary images, images that address the beauty, mystery and complexity embodied in the human form.

Laura Moore, an international visual artist based in Toronto, has been teaching at the Toronto School of Art since 2007.

Her work has been exhibited in such venues as the St. Catharines City Hall Sculpture Garden, Ontario Science Centre, Thames Art Gallery in Chatham, Siena Art Institute in Siena, Italy, Shoshana Wayne Gallery in Santa Monica, CA, Peak Gallery in Toronto, Stride Gallery in Calgary and Anna Leonowens Gallery in Halifax. Moore’s work is also part of the permanent collections of the Thames Art Gallery and Uxbridge Public Sculpture Gardens. She is a returning guest member of Studio Pescarella in Pietrasanta, Italy, where she periodically spends time carving large-scale stone works.

Joe Hambleton, a Canadian-born artist and educator, has been teaching at the Toronto School of Art since 2010. Previously, he taught at York University, Ontario College for Art and Design and Sheridan College.

As a storyteller, Hambleton uses art and the medium of video to create narratives that explore his personal experience and surroundings. By continually altering his process through research and experimentation, Hambleton furthers his understanding of the narrative devices and processes found in other media such as film, video games, music and literature. As Hambleton applies these narrative devices and processes to video, he progressively creates narrative structures that reflect his personality and influences. His work has been shown across North America, Europe and Asia and is represented by the Pari Nadimi Gallery.

John Bingham, a photographer and graphic artist, has been teaching at the Toronto School of Art since 2005. Bingham established his career in traditional photography, but was quick to realize the potential of the newly evolving digital medium. As a result, his unique photographic style and understanding of Photoshop technique has made him a highly sought out industry professional and private tutor. Looking to share his knowledge with other artists, Bingham has found great satisfaction in helping new students of digital photography and Photoshop. His love of teaching has helped many students find fulfillment in photography and the digital arts.

Bingham’s photography practice is based in Canada and he has photographed on assignment in the Canadian Arctic, South America and China. John’s client list includes a number of the country’s largest corporations, professional theater companies and television producers. His photographs have been published in Canadian books and magazines, documentary films and are included in several private collections. Most recently he has developed a unique collection of digital based abstract prints that are being marketed successfully with an internet photo agency. For the last two years he has shown at the Contact Photography Festival and at the 2013 Toronto Urban Photography Festival.

Joe Fleming has been teaching at the Toronto School of Art since 2002. In addition, Fleming has previously been an instructor at OCAD and Sheridan College.

Fleming has been exhibiting internationally for over 15 years, with representation in Vancouver, Calgary, Singapore, Bali and Malaysia. His work has been included in many international art fairs: Rogue Wave Singapore, courtesy of Gallery Taksu, as well as FIAC in Paris, Arte Cologne in Germany, Scope in New York and TIAF in Toronto, all courtesy of Artcore. Fleming’s work is also included in many corporate and public collections: Trimark Mutual Funds, Honeywell Bull, American Barrick, Pricewaterhouse Coopers (Malaysia), HSBC Bank, Choo Mei Lin Cathay Organization Singapore, Australian High Commission, Canadian High Commission (Kuala Lumpur), the Edmonton Art Gallery, the Museum of Civilization (Hull, Québec) and the Holocaust Museum (LA). In 2009, Fleming’s work was included in Carte Blanche 2: Painting.

JACQUELINE TRELOAR | MIXED MEDIA

Jacqueline Treloar, an English-born artist and educator, has been teaching at the Toronto School of Art since 2006. Before moving to Canada, she spent twelve years running a textile design studio in Northern Italy.

Treloar’s work has won her several accolades over the years, including the Ontario Premier’s Award of Excellence, and her work has been featured in numerous periodicals, journals and books, such as Fibrearts, Surfacing, Ontario Craft, Azure andToronto Life. Since coming to Canada in 1984, Treloar has presented her work in exhibitions at the Ontario Crafts Council, the John B. Aird Gallery, the Homer Watson Gallery, the Museum for Textiles, the Art Gallery of Mississauga and the Library and Gallery in Cambridge, among other institutions.

Florian Jacot is a visual artist who has been teaching at the Toronto School of Art since 2009. As well as instructing at TSA, Jacot has been teaching figure sculpture, artistic anatomy, and figurative drawing and painting since 2004 at such schools as Max the Mutt Animation School, Artist 25 Studio, Centennial College and Sheridan College.

Jacot works traditionally in fine arts and does freelance work digitally for the film and gaming industries. His work has been exhibited on several occasions in shows and galleries. In 1999, he received an award from The Sculpture Society of Canada for two of his sculptures.

Donnely Smallwood, a multi-media installation artist, has taught at the Toronto School of Art since 2001.

Using found imagery and text as a starting point, Smallwood transforms a wide range of disparate materials by cutting and rearranging. She is most interested in how collage processes, by isolating and transforming images, work to alter and intensify the reading of the material. Her collage and assemblage fragments come together to form book works, collage drawings and elaborate site-based installations.

Celia Neubauer, a Toronto-based painter, has been teaching painting at the Toronto School of Art since 2001. Previously, she taught at Queen’s University, Kingston, the University of Guelph and the University of Toronto School of Architecture and Landscape Architecture.

Her own works are influenced stylistically and conceptually by her interest in historical tradition. Her landscapes reflect a modernity that bridges both figurative realism and formal abstraction. Her works are included in the collections of BMO Financial Group, Canada Life, Four Seasons, Dubai, Donovan Collection, Hewlett-Packard Canada Ltd., Live Entertainment of Canada Inc., Art Gallery of Mississauga, Ontario Municipal Employees Retirement Board, Tory Tory DesLauriers & Binnington, Toronto, and other private collections. Neubauer’s paintings have also been featured in various publications, such as Abstract Painting in Canada, House and Home and Carte Blanche 2: Painting.

BRIAN HOXHA | PAINTING & PRINTMAKING

Brian Hoxha has been teaching at the Toronto School of Art since 2004. Hoxha is also an educator in watercolour and printmaking at the Art Gallery of Ontario and in the T.D.S.B. at Northern S.S., and a long-time member of Open Studio, the artist-run centre and print studio.

Hoxha’s work explores the beauty and solace of the natural world, whether in painting or making prints. He particularly finds constant inspiration by working on location in breathtakingly beautiful landscapes, as is evident in his journeys to Northern Ontario, Western Canada, Newfoundland and Montana.

Hoxha is currently being represented by Open Studio, Gallery 133, The Denison Gallery, Art Interiors, Tracey Capes F.A., Noveau Gallery in Regina, Saskatchewan, Gibson Fine Arts in Calgary and the Christina Parker Gallery in St. John’s N.F., as well as by a variety of arts consultants in Toronto.

GILLIAN ILES | PAINTING

Gillian Iles, Toronto-based painter and sculptor, has been teaching painting and drawing at the Toronto School of Art since 2003. Previously, she taught at the Ontario College of Art and Design and the School of Animation, Arts and Design at Sheridan College.

Iles’s recent work combines paintings with sculptures, creating installations that incorporate both real and illusionary space. Her work is characterized by representational realism with selected abstraction. She draws her inspiration from the existence of social ideals, social orders and idealized lifestyles as they pertain to Western culture. Her work has been highlighted in Mix Magazine, Toronto Life Magazine, Now Magazine and Eye Weekly, as well as the National Post and The Globe and Mail. She has also been featured in the book Carte Blanche, Volume 2: Painting.

Brian Burnett has been an art instructor at the Toronto School of Art since 1991. In addition, Burnett served as the school’s Director from 2000 to 2004 and has been a member of the Faculty Steering Committee since 1992.

Over approximately 35 years of exhibition, visceral, textured layerings of paint coupled with pattern and movement have been constants in the many paintings executed by Burnett. Through his early period with the Isaacs Gallery (1979–1989) and then with Gallery One (1989–2004), Burnett has displayed a sense of humour and irony in his ongoing investigation into the two-dimensional picture plane. In his most recent work, he has brought together his passion for painting and digital technology, creating digital paintings using Painter 12 software. The final works are limited-edition prints on canvas, mounted on birch panel, with an acrylic topcoat that creates a simulacrum of Burnett’s characteristic style and painting techniques. His work has been collected by the City of Toronto, General Electric, Government of Ontario, Metro Toronto Convention Centre, Art Gallery of Ontario, Art Gallery of Windsor, Art Gallery of Hamilton, Glenbow Museum and McLaren Art, as well as American Express, and is featured in many private collections.

Over the past 40 years, the Toronto School of Art (TSA) has established itself as one of the most distinguished alternative arts schools in the city. While our history alone sets us apart, it’s our ideology that truly defines us. We believe in taking an organic approach to the arts. This translates into a hands-on education model that focuses on studio-based learning. We offer students the opportunity to work with practicing artists in a close, one-on-one environment. What this entails is a rigorous study of the arts through a challenging, tactile application of every skill set learned.

The only thing our students need to get started is a passion for their craft. Once they have that, our mentors are there to further refine, hone and cultivate their skills. It’s this process of artists mentoring other artists that enables our students to truly find their voice and leave their mark on the world.
