An Exploration of Digital Images in Painting Come on a journey of self- discovery and explore digital media and painting. Through the use of computers, digital cameras students will learn to manipulate images in Photoshop, and then transfer these images onto panel and paper through drawings, acrylic paint, image transfers and collage. This workshop will be taught both in the digital art lab and the painting studio where the students will have the opportunity to explore the tools and techniques used to draw, paint and manipulate images. At the end of this workshop students will have completed drawings, and mixed media paintings all inspired by digital media.
Prerequisite: Basic knowledge of Mac Computers and Mac OS 10.x or extensive experience with Microsoft Windows.Instructor: Paul Turner

Material fee: $20 ScheduleMonday March 159 am to 12 noon – Digital Lab -Project 1 and 2- Photoshop basics session 1: creating a composition
Students will learn how to Isolate elements and combine images from different photos
Students will arrive with 4 digital pictures they have taken that they would like to work with as reference.
12 noon – 1 pm – Lunch1 – 4pm – Studio 2 -Transferring the image- Project 1 and 2 (small panels)
Through methods of drawing (grid transfer) and/or acrylic image transfer as well as incorporating found collage elements (Magazines, newspaper, decorative paper etc.) Students will make decisions on drawn and collaged elements of their pieces that will be explored and resolved before the application of any paint.
Tuesday March 169 am to 12 noon – Studio 1 - Projects 1 and 2- Resolution of painted elements. Intro to painting. Understanding Value. Students will apply paint to projects 1 and 2 with a limited pallet, one or two colours of their choosing.
12 noon – 1 pm – Lunch1 – 4pm – Digital Lab/ Studio 1
- Photoshop basics Project 3- Creating a composition. Students will continue learning to isolate elements and combine images from different photos. Use of filters and distortion tools will also be covered while they create a composition reference for the 3rd project, a slightly larger piece based either on one of their first attempts or something completely new.
Wednesday March 179 am to 12 noon – Galleries- Meet at TSA for a tour of the various nearby Artist Run Centres and West Queen West galleries
Project 3- Transferring the image- Project 3 (one larger panel)
Through methods of drawing (grid transfer) and/or acrylic image transfer as well as incorporating found collage elements (Magazines, newspaper, decorative paper ect.) Students will make decisions on drawn and collaged elements of their pieces that will be explored and resolved before the application of any paint.
12 noon – 1 pm – Lunch1 – 4pm – Studio 2
- Students will continue with the morning’s initiatives and begin painting if they get that far.
Thursday March 189 am to 12 noon – Studio 1
- Project 3 -Full colour painting extravaganza! Discussions on colour theory all day on the fly.
12 noon – 1 pm – Lunch1 – 4pm – Sculpture Studio
- Continue with painting on Projects 1, 2, and 3, final critique and discussion last hour.
Material List ** not included in the $ 20 mat fee
-At least 6 pictures that you have taken to be used for reference for the artwork we will be creating. Save these pictures to a disk or USB and bring the disk with you. These images can be of anything, a person, an object, a place and animal…or preferably a couple of each. Absolutely anything goes.
Acrylic Paint: I suggest Liquitex heavy body acrylics in the tubes.
Large tube Titanium White, Raw Umber
Small Tubes Ultramarine Blue, Any cheap Red (but not alizarin crimson it will be too dark), Cadmium, Yellow medium, Cadmium Orange medium, Hookers Green, Violet or Purple of some sort, Burnt Umber,
Ivory Black. These colours are suggestions. Any versions of these colours by different companies will do as long as they are thick in body. Do not buy the liquid format acrylic paint.
-At least 3 Acrylic brushes in different sizes from 1/8 inch to 1.5 inches
-12”x 16” Wax paper Palette (disposable)
-Rags
-Semi- Goss or Gloss medium (liquid not gel)
-Retarder
- a metal Ruler and protractor
-HB pencils/ sharpener
-Eraser
-Palette Knife (metal not plastic)
-bottle of white glue or any glue made for paper
-gesso (small)
-Three wood panel surfaces. They sell them at the art store.
Sizes (1 each): 8”x10” 16”x16” 24”x24” These need to be gessoed before you come on the first day.
