TSA
Programs: Portfolio Development Certificate

Portfolio Development Program
Toronto School of Art (TSA) is one of Canada’s oldest alternative fine art schools.  Founded in 1969, TSA is committed to providing positive environments for aspiring artists to acquire a visual arts education.  Its faculty and programs reflect a balance between traditional skills and their relation to a contemporary issues, ideas, and practices.

TSA has launched a new format for the Portfolio Development Program.  Admission into post-secondary arts programs is largely based on the quality of a student’s (previous) portfolio work. TSA’s directed full time six-month Portfolio Development Program/certificate is designed for individuals seeking entry into other institutions post-secondary programs such as animation, illustration, graphic (and) design, or other fine art programs offered across the country.  The Portfolio Development Program differs from the regular first year of the Fine Art Diploma program due to its stronger focus on building foundation skills in drawing, painting, sculpture and digital.  Admission is based upon an interview with the Coordinator or one of the faculty members in the program. Portfolio Development Program students attend classes together as a group and will be exposed a number of TSA faculty.

The Toronto School of Art’s Portfolio Development Program is one six month session running from September to February.  The upcoming session runs from September 14, 2009 to March 1, 2010.

These meetings will cover group critiques, lectures/discussions, digital workshops, gallery visits, portfolio clinics including mock interviews.

2. The “in-class” portion of the Portfolio Development program is scheduled for a full day on Mondays. The program is broken down into 3 six-week sessions over each term (Fall and Winter) and will include two 3-hour modules, one in the morning and one in the afternoon.  Throughout the program, various workshops and meetings are scheduled with the Portfolio Development Coordinator.  Please see the attached schedule.  These meetings are mandatory and all students are required to attend as they will be evaluated.  Each session is geared toward specific projects and will enable students to create a significant body of work for their admissions portfolio.
3. Additionally, in the Fall term only PD students must take 3 courses: 1 drawing 508, 802 or 901, 1 digital and one other course of their choice from the TSA fall/winter calendar.

Portfolio Development Tuition: $2500.00
Material fees are included for the 3 sessions of the team-taught class. However for the 3 individual classes (drawing, digital and one class of student’s choice) materials are not included and extra fees will apply to overall tuition costs.

International Tuition: $5000.00

Note: If a Portfolio Development student has successfully passed the program they may transfer directly into the Fine Art Diploma program without having to go through portfolio review.  Students will be given 1 full credit for the 130 Portfolio Development program and three half credits for the 3 fall term courses they have taken.

Attendance Policy
Attendance is mandatory and all instructors take attendance. Students are allowed no more than 2 classes per session. Attendance is closely monitored in this program as each class builds from one another. Unexcused absences are not tolerated. All students are required to attend classes and PD Coordinator meetings on time at the scheduled hour for the duration of the term.  If a student is not able to attend a class or session due to illness or emergency he or she should contact the instructor or the office in advance.   If students do not show after one hour, the instructor can terminate the session.

Lateness
All instructors begin their sessions on time and reserve the right to close the door when proceeding with a demonstration. Students with 3 late arrivals in the group sessions (30 minutes or more) will be marked as absent.

Program requirements
1. Portfolio Development students who fail to finish or hand in all assignments for evaluation before the final class of their session will receive an Incomplete (INC).  Students have two weeks from the last class to submit any outstanding assignments for evaluation.  This policy must be communicated to the student by the Instructor who has taught that particular section. Portfolio Development Instructors are required to evaluate all students in the program immediately after their last class. Students who have been given a temporary INC will have to make an appointment within the two weeks with the Instructor and are required to hand in any outstanding work.  If the student fails to do this after two weeks they will receive a “Fail” for their assignment which will result in lowering their grade for the section from a Pass to Marginal Pass or Fail.

2. If a Portfolio Development students fails one of the sessions they will immediately be put on probation. Students who are put on probation must a) attend all classes, b) arrive on time to all classes, c) meet all deadlines. A letter will be sent out to the student by the PD Coordinator indicating their status and what they need to do in order to pass the program.  If they continue, they must maintain at least a Pass or Marginal Pass in order to stay in the program.  They will be re-assessed at the end of the program by the PD Coordinator in consultation with all PD Instructors who will decide whether or not they pass the program.

3. If a Portfolio Development student fails two of the three sessions or does not attend the mandatory PD meetings with the Coordinator they will be asked not to continue the program nor will they receive a certificate of completion.
