Programs: Independent Studio Program
ISP Overview
Independent Studio Program
2009 – 2010
General information
ISP is intended for graduates of a BFA or visual arts program who may want to ease themselves into professional practice or prepare for a Masters of Fine Art degree. Over an eight-month period, each ISP student works with an artist-advisor who offers critical feedback, technical support, and general guidance about the arts community. Studio spaces are bright and comfortable, providing the necessary privacy for focused work while still encouraging communal support. The intimate experience of the ISP provides a hands-on approach that fosters individual development and artistic excellence. Activities such as group critiques, guest lectures, and gallery visits are consistent features of the program and are scheduled by the ISP Coordinator. In addition, ISP students have access to the TSA digital lab, library, exhibition opportunities, and one fine art or digital art course per term. The program runs annually from September to April.
The program’s structure consists of bi-weekly studio visits with a key advisor selected by the student from TSA’s faculty of professional artists. Group meetings with all ISP participants and the ISP coordinator happen on a bi-weekly basis. The key advisor provides critical feedback, technical support and act as a liaison with the Toronto art community. The group meetings create a forum for peer support and discussion of professional practices and career skills. Students can take any one of over seventy courses offered in the fall and winter term. In addition, participants are engaged in special group projects, guest artist lectures, two school open house exhibitions and an offsite exhibition at Fly Gallery in the heart of the West Queen West gallery district. The program supports an engaged student body and the opportunity to develop one’s lecture and presentation skills.

History of the Program
September 1997 marked the beginning of the Toronto School of Art’s Independent Studio Program. Now entering its 12th year! The program allows TSA graduates and graduates from other Art Programs to continue with their studies in individual studio spaces located within the realm of the TSA. This year long program is meant to be a transition year from student to individual practicing Artist.
